i METALLIC REINFORCEMENT FOR WALLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1912.
Original application filed. August 1, 1910, Serial No. 574,768. Divided and this application filed January Serial No. 602,? 82.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER L. COLLINS, residing at Milford, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Metallic Reinforcement for Walls, of which the following is a specification.
This application is a division of my application #574:,768, filed August 1, 1910. In said application a lath and plaster wall is shown as extended down to the base-board and a metallic reinforcement is provided, having a lip which extends over the top of the base-board and having a foraminous portion which is embedded in the plaster wall and extends-from front to back of the wall, in a diagonal direction, thereby holding the lip securely.
This invention has for its object the construction of a metallic reinforcement especially adapted for this purpose, which may be made easily and cheaply, and which is well suited for the purposes designed, and which is very durable.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of an edge reinforcement for a lath and plaster wall embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of a portion of the same.
0 represents a lath and plaster wall of usual construction, except it is herein provided with my improved edge reinforcement, and, as here shown, for the purpose of illustrating my invention, said wall 0 is extended to a base-board h. The edge reinforcementis arranged at the junction of the wall and base-board, being embedded in the plaster and extended from back to front, and having an exposed lip at the front which extends down over the top of the base-board. Said reinforcement comprises essentially a lip 2' which is arranged at the top of the base-board and extended downward at the front side thereof, and means for holding said lip in place. The holding means for the lip is connected with the plaster wall, so that said lip will be securely held regardless of shrinkage of the base-board, and said lip is also preferably additionally held by means extended across the top of the baseboard and down along the back side thereof, so that the top of the base-board occupies a position between the lip and the means extended down along the back side thereof. As here shown, said reinforcement is made of a strip of sheet metal, which is bent to form a back portion 2' which is folded upon itself for a short distance, as at i, and a horizontal portion 2' arranged to extend across the top of the base-board, a downwardly extended lip i which isfolded upon itself, a diagonal portion 2' made long enough to extend from front to back of the wall, and an upwardly extended portion 2' at the back of the wall. In this form of reinforcement all portions thereof, except the diagonal portion 2', may be made solid, but said portion 2' is made foraminous; and so far as my invention is concerned said portion 2' may be made foraminous in a suitable manner to permit the plaster to pass through it soas to become firmly embedded in the plaster of the wall.
One of the essential features of this reinforcement is the lip i which it will be noted extends down over the top of the baseboard for a short distance and closes the space between the top of the base-board and the lower end of the plaster wall 0, and said lip is held by means embedded in the plaster wall and by means extended rearward and engaging the back of the base-board. The employment of a reinforcement of this kind obviates the necessity of providing a molding at the top of the base-board, and also admits of the employment of a base-board which is arranged flush with the face of the plaster wall.
I claim 1. The metallic reinforcement herein described adaptecl to be arranged at the junction of a plaster wall and a baseboard, consisting of a strip of sheet metal bent to form a back portion which is folded upon itself for a short distance at its lower end to form a lip, a horizontal portion arranged to extend forward across the top of the baseboard, a downwardly extended portion at the front end of said horizontal portion which is folded upon itself to form a lip, an upwardly inclined portion above said lip which is made long enough to extend from front to back of the wall, and a portion extended upwardly at the rear end of said inclined portion.
2. The metallic reinforcement herein described adapted tobe arranged at the junction of a'plaster wall and a base-board, consisting of a strip of sheet metal bent to form a back portion which is folded upon itself for a short distance at its lower end to form wardly at the rear end of said inclined pora lip, a horizontal portion arranged to extion. I
tend forward across the top of the base- In testimony whereof, I have signed my board, a downwardly extended portion at name to this specification in the presence of 5 the front end of said horizontal portion two subscribing witnesses.
which is folded upon itself to form a lip, an
upwardly inclined portion above said lip WALTER COLLINS which is made long enough to extend from Witnesses: front to back of the wall, and which is made B. J. Noxns,
10 foraminous, and a portion extended up- H. B. DAVIS.
