SNOW-PLOW FOR RAILWAYS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 23, 1908.

Be it known that I, ORRIN F. FILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow-Flows for Railways, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to snow-plows for railways, and has for its object to provide a plow which can be raised and lowered, and also adjusted so as to throw the snow to either side of the track.
A further obi ect of the invention is to provide a snow-p ow which is simple in construction and which can be readily applied to a car without modifying the structure thereof;
With these and other objects in view as will appear more fully hereinafter, the invention consists in the novel arrangement and construction of parts shown in the accompanying drawings and described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view artly in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modification. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 41- 1 of Fig. 3.
Referring specifically to the drawin s, 5 denotes the car-body, only so much 0 the front end thereof being shown as will suifice to show the connection of the invention therewith. The truck-frame 6 is connected at its front end by the usual cross-rod 7.
The plow share is indicated at 8. It is pivoted at the middle to swing in a horizontal plane. On the back of the share are knuckles 9 which receive a vertical shaft 10 on which the share swings. The share is also free to slide up and down on the shaft 10 so that when it encounters an obstruction on the track, like a stone, etc., it will ride up or bounce over it. The shaft is carried by a supporting-frame comprisin upper and lower rods 11 and 12, respective y. The rods 11 are rigidly connected at one end to the upper end of the shaft and diverge and are hinged at their other end to the cross-rod 7 as indicated at 18. The rods 12 are rigidly connected to the lower end of the shaft and also diverge and are hinged to the cross-rod 7 as indicated at 14.-. The share is adapted to be set obliquely to the car, and in order to hold it rigidly in this position a stay-rod 15 is employed which is pivoted on the crossrod 7 at one end, and has at the other end a hook 16 which enters an eye 17 on the back of the share near the end thereof. Each end of the share is provided with an eye, and a stay-rod is provided for each eye. The stayrod on the same side of the car as the ad vanced end of the share will be connected to the latter as stated, the stay-rod on the other side of the car being disengaged and swung up out of the way against the side-wall of the car-body, where it may be secured by a chain or other suitable fastening device 18.
To the front wall of the car-body is secured a bracket 19 in which is mounted a guide-pulley 20. The bracket is braced by rods 21 secured to the front wall of the carbody and connected to the ends of the pintle of the ulley.
On t e inside of the car is a winding device 22 which operates a cable or rope 23 connected to the supporting-frame of the share for the purpose of raising and lowering the same. To the rods 12 is secured a stirrup 24 to which the cable is made fast, and it passes over the pulley 20, and through a slot 25 in the front wall of the car-body to the winding device 22. The ends of the rods 12 which are connected to the shaft 10 engage the bottom of the lower knuckle 9 so that when said rods are swung up or down by the cable 23, the share will be raised or lowered.
In Figs. 3 and 4: the apparatus is shown mounted directly on the car-body 5 by means of hangers 26 secured thereto. The hangers are provided with braces 27 which are socured to the bottom of the car-body.
The object of the last described arrangement is to enable the plow to be used on cars havin swiveled trucks. In such cases the first escribed arrangement would not be practicable by reason of the relative movement of the car-body and the truck on curves. The first described arrangement is intended only for four-wheeled cars in which a single truck is rigidly connected to the car-body.
By the means herein described the share will readily pass over obstructions that may be on the track, it can be reversed, and raised or lowered to suit the condition of the roadbed. The attaching means enable it to be mounted on said shaft.
3. The combination with a car having at its front end a cross-rod, of a support hinged on said cross-rod to swing in a vertical plane, and a plow-sharepivot-allvmounted on the support to swing in a horizontal plane.
4. The combination with a car, of a vertically swinging support thereon, a plowshare pivoted to the support to swing in a horizontal plane, and means for raising and lowering the support. I
