IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-PLATFORM PROTECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,517, dated July 4, 1876; application filed May 8, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES F. OALLAWAY, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Platform- Protector for Railroad-Oars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap1.)ertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in certain improvements upon platform-protectors for railroad passenger-cars, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. 7 p
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a central vertical section. Fig. 2 is a rear view of car A; and Fig. 3 is a bottom view of protector O.
A represents a passenger-car nearest the engine, and B is the car immediately in rear thereof, and coupled to it. C is the sliding protector made of sheet-iron, wood, or other suitable material.
This protector moves on rollers fastened on the top of the car, and also on the edges thereof, and is pulled forward and back by means of a wire, cord, or chain working over pulleys.
This invention is an improvement on my patent dated February 22, 1876, No. 173,764, in which the apron between the cars is hinged, and liable to rise while backing the cars, permitting the soot and dust to fall on the platforms. By the present invention the protector remains in a line parallel with the top of the cars, and is not liable to displacement. If
the edges of the roof of the car A are so constructed that the rollers cannot be attached thereto, a piece of iron can be attached thereto for the rollers to work in. On the sides of the protector G are rollers D, which work against the edges of the roof of the car; and said rollers are so made as to have sufficient play to allow the protector to work up and down when the cars are in motion. On the under side of the protector are mounted rollers E, to facilitate the motion forward and back, and to prevent the wear, by friction, of the roof of the car A. F is a pulley, secured on the rear end of the car A, or the rope or chain'ct to work over, which pulley can be taken off and fastened on the front end of the car B, it it should be desired to'attach the protector thereto. Back of the pulley F on the roof of the car is mounted another pulley, O, for the cord or chain a to work over. This cord or chainis fastened, by books at G and H, to the protector 0. Under the front end of the protector G is fastened a piece, I, of india-rubber, or other suitable material, to prevent the water, cinders, 850., from getting under the same. At the rear end of the car A is a bolt, L, to pass up through the roof of the car and through the protector, to hold the latter in position, either drawn back or extended over the space between the cars. On the front end of the roof of the car B are raised projections N for the protectorO to rest on, to prevent wear and tear by friction, and facilitate the motion thereof; and a piece of india-rubber or wood may be fastened across the roof of the car B at a suitable point, to prevent water, dust, or cinders from getting in under the protector. The protector O, in addition to covering the space between the two cars or the platform, may extend down on each side, so as to protect or ward off the wind and rain from the sides.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The rollers D and E, arrangcd,respecti vely, at the edges and underneath the sliding protector O, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The bolt L, in combination with the car and sliding protector, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
