INVENTOR 6' Iaa2- Arron/vim WITNESSES" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 16, 1907'.
Application filed May 8, 1906. Serial No. 315,852.
To a, when" it 'nut l concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN (l. BUXTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buxton, in the county of Monroe and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a BoXCar Loader, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carloaders, and more particularly to box-car loaders, the ob ject being to provide a loader by means of which a box-car can be quickly loaded through an end or side door.
Another object of my invention is to provide a chute so constructed that the coal passing through the same will be turned up 011 its edge, so as to prevent the lumps from wedging together and choking the chute.
Another object of my invention is to provide means foradjusting the chute so that it can be easily and quickly lowered into a door of a car or hoisted out of the same.
With these various objects in View my invention consists in the employment of a pair of standards arranged to one side of a turntable supporting a chute, said standards being provided with a Windlass for adjusting said chute.
The invention consists also in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevational view of my improved loader. Fig. 2 is a per spective view of my improved chute, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the sections of the chute. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the chute.
In the drawings, A indicates an ordinary turn-table, B a box-car arranged thereon, and C a pair or uprights arranged to one side. Secured to each upright C, adjacent its upper end, by braces E and rods E are beams E, which extend upwardly and backwardly from the uprights. A chute F is suspended from the rear end of the beams E, having curved slots F formed in its side adjacent its forward end, to the outside of which are secured guideways G, which extend upwardly above the side of the chute and are provided with closed lower ends G, forming stops for the blocks H, secured to the outside of a chute H, adjacent its upper end adapted to Work in the guideway.
The chute is also provided with a V-shaped bottom adjacent its lower end, adapted to turn the lumps of coal up on their edges as they pass through, so as to prevent the same from choking the chute. The sides of the chute are connected together by braces I and J, which prevents the same from spreading, and the brace I is provided with spaced openings, in which the rods K are secured, which are pivoted in the lower ends of the beams E, supporting the chute. A Windlass L is secured between the uprights, carrying a cable M, which passes over pulleys N N, secured to the beams E, having their ends secured in the apertured plates 0, secured to the side of the chute H, adjacent its upper end, so that the chute H can be raised or lowered by the Windlass, so that it can be quickly adjusted in the door B of the box-car B.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that as soon as one end of the boxcar is filled it can be turned on the turn-table, so that the other end is filled.
aving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a stationary chute provided with a curved guideway, of a chute provided with a V-shaped bottom and guide-blocks mounted in said chute and means for raising and lowering said chute, for the purpose described.
2. The combination with uprights provided with beams, of a chute suspended from said beams provided with curved slots in its sides adjacent its lower end, a chute provided with guide-blocks slidably mounted in said slots pivotally suspended from said beams, and adjusting means connected to said chute, for the purpose described.
3. The combination with uprights and supporting-beams, of a chute suspended from said beams, provided with guideways adjacent its lower end, a chute provided with guide-blocks mounted in said guideways, suspended from said beams, and a Windlass carried by said uprights, for adjusting said chute, for the purpose described.
4. The combination with uprights and supporting-beams, of a chute suspended from said beams provided with guideways adjacent its lower end, a chute suspended from said beams provided with a V-shaped hottom adjacent its lower end, guide-blocks sesaid pulleys, having their ends connected to cured t0 the sides of said chute, adjacent its the upper end of the sliding chute, for the upper end adapted to Work in the guideways purpose described. of the first-mentioned chute, braces connect- BENJAMIN C. BUXTON.
5 ing the side of the chute With the V-shaped Witnesses:
bottom, pulleys carried by said beams and a S. J. TENNANT,
Windlass carrying cables adapted to pass over M. L. CROWDER.
