To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHEW S, ,KELLY,'a citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Paul. in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Stock andDrive Gate, of which thet'ollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to stock and drive gates and has for its object to provide a gate H) having a pair oi supporting posts, arranged to support two swinging gates in slidable re lation thereon, so that the said gates may be lifted vertically to permit passage through the same or for swinging outwardly upon their hinges as required.
Another object is toprovide a pulley at each or the upper ends of the gate posts, with a cord secured at one end of said gate and at the other end to a counter weight passing over, thus supporting the gate in either closed or elevated position.
A still further object is to provide a guide way with an auxiliary member slidable with the said guide way, to which the gate is attached.
A still further object is to provide means for holding the gate locked in either its open or closed position.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof, and are particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, the figure is a perspective view of my invention.
The invention proper consists of two gate posts 10 and 11 which may be secured to the ground or to the structure with which they are used in conjunction, in any suitable manner. These two posts are connected together at the top by means of two rails 12 and 13 which are rigidly secured to the upper ends of the same. By means of these rails the posts 10 andll are held in spaced relation to one another, to support the gate structure of the invention.
The gates proper are indicated in their en tirety at A and B. Each consists of upper and lower rails 14 and 15 and stiles 16 and 17 which are connected thereto and which may be braced with a diagonal brace .18 if desired. The entire structure is nailed together in the usual manner to secure a substantial structure which is attached to and ex tends between the two gate-posts 10 and 11. For operating the gates, Iattach to each of the posts 10 and 11, twostrips 19 and 20 which are'form'ed with oppositelyfacing grooves 2, for providing guide ways along each of said posts. l/Vithin said guide ways are slidably mounted two ton'gued .1 supporting members 1,whose tongues set within the grooves 2 to retain'the same in place. These members 1 are ofa length substantially equal to the height of the gates A and B and are provided with hinges 21by means otwhich the said gates maybe hinged thereto. To the upper end of each of-the members1, is attached a rope 8, which rope extends upwardly between the strips 19 and 20 and over a pulley 22, journaled in the upper end of each of the posts 10 and 11 and has attached to its other end a counter weight 23 equal to the weight of either of the gates A or B. By grasping either of the gates A or B and lifting the same, the members are caused to slide within the guides formed between the strips 19 and 20 so that the gate may be raised above the level of the ground to permit passage beneath the same. As can be readily seen, each of the gates may be independently raised or lowered to give. access beneath the same, or either of the gates may e be swung on the hinges to permit passing through the device.
For holding the gate closed from swinging, 1 provide a latch bar 4 which is pivoted to the gate B at 24 and which is adapted to rest in a number of keepers 5 attached to the two gates. A pin 6, insertable in one of the said gates, immediately above the latch bar 4 prevents accidental removal of the said latch bar from the keepers 5. For holding the members 1 in elevated or lowered position, I provide a pair ofbolts 7 which are slidably mounted in said members and are adapted to pass through the same and into the posts 10 and 11. These bolts have attached'to them rods 8 which are pivoted to levers 25 which levers are in turn pivoted to the respective gates. When the said levers are moved in one direction the bolts are withdrawn from engagement with the posts 10 and 11 and when the said levers are moved in the opposite direction members 1 are held fast to the said posts.
The advantages of my invention are mani-v test. In stock yards or similar places where 110 animals have to pass throughthe gates, the animals crowd up to the same, so thatit is absolutely impossible to swing the gates I open to permit passage therethrough without backing up the animals; My invention eliminates this disadvantage, in that the gate may be raised upwardly so that the same does not interfere with the animals as they may be located prior to passing through the gate. When used as a driving gate, the device saves a great number of steps to the person using the gate, as the vehicle may be stopped much closer to the gate than would be possible, were the gate simply swung in the usual manner. It may further be stated that when it is desired to permit a pedestrian topass throughthe gate, the same may be opened and swung outwardly an amo unt sufficient to permit of the passage of a person through the same,insteadof raising the entire gate. In additionto the above 'features of the invention, thegates maybe independently raised and lowered so that a portion of the full opening ofthe gate may be secured.
In accordance with the patent statutes l have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the appara tus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claim.
I claim:
A gate closure comprising a gate post, a pair of oppositely facing grooved guideways secured to said post, a tongued upright 2:;
slidable between said guideways, a gate hingedly connected to said upright, said post being formed with a recess at its upper end, a pulley positioned within said recess extending beyond said post on both sides thereof, a 'cord passing over said pulley and secured at one end to said upright and a counter weight secured to the other end of said cord.
