Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WVHALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shoe Trees or Forms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in shoe trees or forms, and has for its object to provide a hollow form which when inserted within the shoe will hold the latter in shape while at the same time permit free circulation of air therein to facili tate the evaporation and passing off of moisture, especially from the sole and heel of the shoe, thus overcoming the tendency of the shoe to mold or sour.
A further object of my invention is to provide an exceedingly simple and effective arrangement by which the form may be wedged tightly within the shoe, and yet easily withdrawn therefrom when occasion requires without wearing or breaking of the counter.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective of a shoe tree made in accordance with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a detailed plan view showing the manner of permanently pivoting the operating lever to the front section of the tree.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, I provide a front section A which corresponds to the shape of the front portion of the last upon which the shoe was made, and this section is made of a sheet of material either metal, vulcanized fiber, papiermach or other suitable material either bent or molded into shape as may best suit the requirements so as to produce a hollow form.
D represents the heel section which also may be made of sheet metal or other suitable material so as to correspond with the rear portion of the shoe and especially adapted to fit against and support the counter.
The section A of the tree has formed therewith the lugs C to which is pivoted the operating lever E, and F are lugs formed upon the heel section to which the operating lever is also pivoted, this lever being provided with a series of holes G by which the adjustment between it and the heel section may be varied by withdrawing the pivot pin from the lugs F and reinserting it in another of the holes G as will be readily understood.
The mechanism as just described consists of the operating lever E pivoted to lugs formed upon each of the sections of the tree, and by inserting the tree within the shoe and then forcing the lever E downward the front section will be crowded into the forward section of the shoe and the heel section against the counter, thus locking the tree in place against accidental displacement, and when it is desired to remove the tree it is only necessary to swing the lever upward which will draw the heel section forward permitting it to be swung upward out of the shoe after which the front section of the tree may be readily withdrawn.

In shoe forms, a hollow front section having at its rear end an upstanding lug formed on the base thereof, a hollow rear section having at its front end an upstanding apertured lug formed on the base thereof, a le ver pivoted to the lug on the front section, said lever being provided with a line of apertures and a pivot pin engaged through a selected one of said apertures and through the apertured lug of the rear section.
