REPAIR TIP FOR UMBRELLAS.
APPLIOATION FILED 13130.7. 1906.
avmmufoz LAUREL MILO HOYT, OF HILLSBORO, OREGON;
REPAIR-TIP FOB UMBRELLAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1908.
Application filed December '7. 1906. Serial No. 346.802.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAUREL MiLo HoY'r, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsboro, in the county of Washington and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Repair-Tips for Umbrellas; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to umbrellas and the like, but more particularly to an apparatus for repairing or replacing a broken tip on the ribs and the lower ends of the stretchers.
My invention has for its object to provide a repair or substitute tip on the rib of an umbrella, and my invention consists in the novel construction of the repair or substitute tip.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of the tip blank. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing repair tip in position on umbrella arm. Fig 3 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation showing tip fastened on end of broken rib.
Like numerals of reference indicate ti.e same parts throughout the several figures in which,
1 indicates the tip which is shown in Fig. 1 and is stamped from a piece of sheet metal having a V shaped slot 2 therein, said shaped slot terminating in two circular perforations-3 as shown in Fig. 1.
The tip is rolled into form shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and when in this shape the same is ready to be secured to an umbrella rib. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the, upper portion of the tip is flattened at 4 the V shaped slot 12 forming an oblique slot 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described the several parts of my invention its operation is as follows: In order to repair an umbrella rib, (that is to replace a broken tip or to repair the lower end of a stretcher of an umbrella) the tip 1 is passed over the broken end in the manner as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The tip being carried over the end of the rib as far as possible a repairing implement is placed in position on the tip 1, forcing the edges 13 and 14 of the tip into the concave portion of the rib. That portion of the tip which is thus forced inwardly into the groove or concavity of the umbrella rib extends almost the entire length of the rolled or barrel portion of the tip 1 in such manner that the turned in edges of the tip engage the flattened end of the umbrella rib so that the tip 1 cannot be removed unless the turned in edges are straightened out as is clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4.
When the ends of umbrella ribs, or stretchers become broken the break generally occurs at the perforation or eye, leaving a slight part of the usual flattened portion of the rib as shown in Fig. 3. The location of the eye or perforation in the ribs etc., varies in umbrellas and consequently the length of the remaining flattened portion on the rib etc., varies. The repair tip on account of the rolled 01' barrel portion will accommodate itself to the varying lengths of the remaining flattened portions of the ribs etc., as none of the remaining flattened portion of the rib enters the flattened portion of the tip, as the edges 13 and 14 of the rolled or barrel portion of the tip is pressed by means of a suitable implement into the concavity of the rib, thus accommodating the remaining flattened portion of the rib within the rolled or barrel portion of the repair tip.
Having thus fully described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
As an article of mamifacture, a repair tip for repairing broken ends of umbrella ribs, or stretehe'rs, said repair tip comprising a rolled or barrel portion and a flattened portion, said flattened portion having an oblique slot therein, the said rolled or barrel portion being arranged to receive the broken rib, or stretcher of an umbrella, said rolled or barrel portion being provided with two contiguous edges arranged to be pressed into the concavity of the rib or stretcher, substantially as described.
in testimony whereof, I affix in presence of two witnesses.
LAUREL MILO .llOY'l.
