ANSON W. HALL, OF JZIilLSZ-OWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 19091 Application fine April 4, 1908. Serial No. 425,246.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anson W. HALL, a-
citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State ofPennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements 'in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lamps, and particularly safety lamps for the use of miners, the object of the invention being to provide a novel construction of locking means for securing the oil font or pot of the lamp to the body of the lamp in such manner as to prevent removal of the font except'by anauthorized person pro vided with a. proper type of key.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a commercial type of miners safety lamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation, rtially in section, of the lower portion o i he lamp body and the font. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the locking dog. Fig. 4 is asimilar view of the key. 4
Referring to the drawing; the numeral 1 designates the base of the body of the lamp, on which the burner is mounted in the ordinary or any preferred manner, which base is provided with 2. depending internally threaded flange 2, the lower edge ofivhich is formed at one point in its circumference with a keepensocket or recess 3 having at I one end a straight or abrupt locking shoul- 'der 4 and provided with a beveled or inclined up er. wall 5 leading therefrom to the basal sur ace of the flange.
. The oil fontor putt is formed at its up per end with an externally threaded flange 7 for en agement with the threads of the flange 2, by which said font is adapted to be secured in position at the lower end of the body of the lam to form the base of the complete lamp. lhe flange 7 is of reduced diameter with respect to the vertical wall of the font and is connected therewith by an inturned annular horizontal ledge or shoulder 8,which is formed with a slot 9 substantially coextensive in length with the locking recess 3.. Below said slot 9 the vertical wall of the font 6 is provided with a chamber 10 having at one side of its center a horizontal shoulder 11 and at the opposite and arm 18 of the dog,
side of its center a depending recess or enlar ement 12. Fixed to the inner wall of sai chamber adjacent the up er end of said recess is a guard pin 13, whic projects into and is ex osed through a keyhole 14 in the outer wa l of the chamber, said keyhole being of approximately circular form and having a substantially U-shaped base or extension 15. l l
Alocking dog 16, comprisin an elongated metallic strip, is arranged within the chamber 10 and mounted to swing vertically upon apivot pin 17, the pivotm point being closer to one end of the do t an to its 0 posite end, thus eccentrically mounting vt ing arm 19 of unequal engths. Asu tantially V-sha ed leaf spring 20 is in the chambe one llif of said spring bearing on said shoulder and the other on said arm, thus normally prejectin the arm 18 upward through the slot 9, whi e the arm 19 is held depressed within the chamber immediately above the guardv pin 13. A. key 25 is provided for retracting the dog or recess 21 at its outer end to receive and engage the pin 13, thus allowing said key to ber, and also with a bit 22 of proper form to fit the portion 15 of the keyhole. The short end or arm 19 of the dog is provided with a depending projection 19 to prevent the bit of the key from sli ping off the end of said arm, and wedging lietween the same and adjacent wall of the recess.
font, the flange 7 is screwed within the flange 2 of the base of the lamp in the ordinary way until the ledge 7 bears against the lower face of said flange 2, the arm 18 of the dog being held against the resistance of the spring down into the chamber 10 by the pressure of the bottom face of the flange 2 until said dog comes into alinement with be projected by the spring into said recess and held therein so that the end of said arm will bear against the shoulder 4. By this means the font will be locked against retrograde rotation in its fully applied position, so that it cannot be removed, except through the retraction of the dog by the use of a proper form of key, such as that shown.
it will be understood that the inclined wall difiposed r 10 between the shoe or 11.
In the operation of applying the filled the recess 3, at which time the arm 18 will dog to provide a lockin arm 18 and 0 ratand 1s formed with a stem having a socket be inserted into the portion 12 of the chamof the recess-3 will permit the font to be turned a little further around for the pun pose of tightening the threaded connection between the flanges when they become slightly loosened from wear, but that anyattempt to remove the font by reverse rotation will result in the engagement of the dog with the shoulder 4, whereby such attempt would be defeated. In order :to' release the dog for the removal of the font, the he is applied in an obvious manner and turne so as to'brin its bit 22 into contact with the underside o? the arm' 19, whereupon the dog will be swung to a horizontal position, thus retracting the arm 18 and permitting the font to be screwed oil.
The invention will be found of value to prevent the removal of the fonts of lamps by unauthorized persons, or by any one other than a fire-boss or other authorized person provided with the proper type oi key, thus obviating the danger of the ignition and explosion of gases in the mine from careless l-removal' of the font and exposure of the lamp flame. Unless the miner is provided with a key, he cannot remove the font, and yet the construction of the lock is such as to enable it to be removed for filling or other purposes by an authorized oflicial, without the necessity of the miner traveling a considerable distance to a station, as is neces sary where complicated locks which can only 'be opened by the use of magnets or complicated mechanism are employed. I
Having thus fully described the inven: tiou, what is claimed as new is i- 1. In a lock forlainps, the combination of a lamp body having a threaded base pro vided in the underside thereof with a recess having an abrupt shoulder and an inclined wall, a lamp font provided with a coiiperat ing threaded portion and formed with a horizontal chamber opening through its upper edge, said chamber being provided at one side of its center with a horizontal shoulder and at the opposite side of its center with a depending recess or enlargement, the
der and the locking arm to tilt the dog and project said locking arm for engagement with said recess and shoulder upon the lamp base, and a key guide within said recess or enlargement and in alinement with the key hole. I V v 2. In a lock for lamps, the combination of 'a lamp body having a threaded base provided in the underside thereof with a recess having an abrupt shoulder and an inclined wall, a lamp font provided with a cooperating threaded portion and formed with a horizontal chamber opening through its upper edge, said chamber being provided at one side ofits center with a horizontal. shoulder and at the opposite side of its center with a depending recess or enlargement, the latter having a keyhole leading thereto, a dog comprising a bar eccentrically pivoted within said chamber and having a locking arm located above the shoulder in said chamher and an operating arm located above said recess, a spring disposed between said shoulder and the lockingarm to tilt the dog and project said locking arm for engagement with said recess and shoulder upon the lamp base, a key guide within said recess or enlargementand in alinement with the keyhole and a depending lip or projection upon the operating arm of the dog arranged to coop'eratewith said guide and the bit of the Key In testimony whereof I afiix my. signature in presence of two witnesses.
