Description

(No Model.)
o. WOLF. MINERS SAFETY LAMB.
No. 530,217, Patented Dec. 4, 1894 UNITE STATES PATENT tries.
CARL WOLF, OF ZWICKAU, GERMANY.
MINERS SAFETY-LAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,217, dated December 4, 1894.
Application filed June 9, 1894- Serial No. 514,036- (No model.)
To all whom it m any concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL WOLF, a subject of the Emperorof Germany, residing at Zwickau, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Safety-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
In the magnetic locking devices for miners lamps as hitherto employed, the latches or catches for sealing the same were released by magnetic attraction and were also provided with protecting plates of brass, German silver or other metal unaffected, or at least very slightly magnetized. Such devices have in practice been found to be defective in that the protecting plates or shields were readily pierced or bored through and thus access to the catches was obtained.
The principal object of my present invention is to construct a lamp in such manner as that the locking device or catch of the lamp cannot be released by unauthorized persons, whereby the danger of mining disasters by explosions which occur with the hitherto con structed lamps, is overcome; and to which end my invention consists in providing a safety lamp with'a protecting plate of tempered steel, in place of the usual unmagnetizable soft metal plates,.and providing the same with an insulating plate so that a magnet can act on the catch to release the same.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1, is a view partly in elevation and partly in vertical section on the liners-00, of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2, is a view partly in plan and partly in horizontal section through the locking device of the lamp, showing the magnet.
By reference to the drawings, the locking device of the lamp consists of a catch 19, which is pivoted at h, to the top rim or flange of the casing of the lamp and the hooked end of the catch is adapted to engage a notch or recess f, in the flange or rim of the said casing, as illustrated in Fig. 2, thus preventing access being had to the flame of the lamp. A movement of the catch I), normally engaged and and pressed by a spring m, is effected by means of a horse-shoe magnet A, as shown in broken section in Fig. 2, and whose poles are set onto the iron core pieces cand d, for magnetizing the same. The end i, of the catch 12, is attracted by an extension k, of the core piece (1. Such extension with its attracting face g, together with the attracting face e, of the core piece c, causes the catch 1), to turn on the pivot 71., as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.
The projecting plate a, of tempered steelplate is bent on the upper and lower edges onto the rim or flange of the lamp and thus prevents access being had to the catch by boring or otherwise; and this plate a, is provided with an insulating plate Z, of unmagnetizable metal, for instance, brass, German silver or other insulating material arranged on the inner side of the plate opposite the end *5, of the catch b, to prevent said magnetizable plate a, acting on the catch and causing the latter to turn on its pivot h.
It will be observed that by pulling on the magnet A, the insulating plate Z, permits the end *5, of the catch 12, to be attracted by the core piece it, and of the catch then turning on its pivot h, and which catch is by such action released from the notch f,- in order to permit of the lamp being opened.
Having thus described the nature and 0bj-ects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- A miners safety lamp provided with a notched flange or rim and having core-pieces, a magnet, a pivotal catch, a protecting plate arranged around said flange or rim and having insulating material interposed between the same and said plate opposite one end of said catch to prevent said plate from being magnetized, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL WOLF.
