commodate the said tube.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVILLIAM J MODOWVELL, OF SNOW? SHOE, PENNSYLVANIA.
MIN ERS SAFETY-LAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,671, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed November 5, 1889. serial No. 329,269. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. McDow- ELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Snow Shoe, in the county of Centre and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Miners Safety-Lamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to miners safetylamps; and it has for its object to construct a device of this class which shall be simple, durable, and inexpensive, and which shall be so constructed as to effectually prevent its being tampered with by unauthorized persons.
The invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved safetylamp. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line or :1: in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line y 'g in Fig. 2.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
The base 1 of the lamp, which forms the oilreservoir, is provided on its upper side with an opening 2, surrounded by an annular interiorly-screw-threaded flange 3.
4 designates the wick-tube, which. is provided with a horizontal annular flange 5, adapted to fit within the flange 3, where it is held securely by means of an exteriorly-screwthreaded clamping-ring 6, the upper edge of which is milled in order that it may be conveniently manipulated. A tube 7 extends from the bottom of the oil-reservoir upwardly through the opening 2, and the flange 5 of the wick-tube is provided with a notch 8 to ac- The upper end of the wick-tube is provided with avertical slot 9, for the purpose to be hereinafter described.
10 designates a rod arranged to slide vertically through the tube 7, and having its lower end bent so as to form a handle 11. The upper end of the rod 10 is bent so as to form a U-shaped bracket 12, having an outwardlyextending arm 13, the outer end of which is provided with a laterally-extending hook or point 14. It will be seen that by manipulating the rod 10 the point 14 may be brought into engagement with the wick 15 through the slot 9 in the wick-tube for the purpose of raising or lowering the wick. It also may be used for the purpose of removing the burned portion of the wick by causing the arm 13 to sweep across the upper end thereof. When not in use, the parts 13 and 14 may be accommodated within the clamping-ring 6. The upper end of the base 1 is exteriorly screwthreaded, as shown at 16, for the purpose of connecting it with the body of the lamp.
The body of the lamp is composed of two rings 17 18, which are connected by means of vertical rods or bolts 19, extending through flanges 20 of the said rings, and the lower one of which is interiorly screw-threaded, as shown at 21. The upper ring 17 is provided with upwardly-extending rods or bolts 22, to the upper ends of which is secured a metallic cap 23, centrally to which is swiveled a hook or eye 24, by means of which the lamp may be held or suspended when in operation.
designates a cylindrical hood of wiregauze, closed at its upper end and having a lower conical portion 26. An additional cylindrical hood 27 surrounds the cylindrical hood 25, thus making a double thickness of Wire-gauze.
28 designates an inverted, frustumshaped metallic tube, which is provided near its lower end with an annular flange of wire-gauze 29. The latter fits against the base of the conical portion 26 of the hood 25, and the upper end of the tube 28 reaches to the intersection of the cylindrical hood 25 and its conical lower portion 26. The complete hood 30, which is formed by the parts 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29, is fitted between the rods 22 of the upper portion of the lamp-body, and the flange 29 is caused to bear against a flange 31, formed interiorly upon the ring 17 of the lamp-body.
designates the glass, which is cylindrical in shape and made of a very heavy grade of the best glass procurable. This glass is fitted between a pair of flanged packing- rings 32 and 33, between which and the ends of the glass packing 34 of asbestus or other suitable noncombustible material is interposed. The lower flanged packing-ring 33 is exteriorily screw-threaded, as shown at 36, so as to engage the interior screw-thread 21 of the lower ringof thelamp-body. The said packing-ring 33 is also provided with inwardly-extending radial lugs 37 to receive a key, by means of which the said packing-ring may be tightened or unscrewed, as the case may require.
The lower ring 18 of the lamp-body is provided with a laterallyextending lug 38,
through which extends a set-screw 39, the inner end of which is adapted to engage an annular groove 40, formed in the base of the lamp The outer end of the set-screw 39 has a perforation 41 to receive a pointed instrument, by means of which it may be tightened, and the said set-screw has a squared head 42, adapted to engage a slot 43 in a U-shaped clasp 44, which is adapted to fit over the head 42 and lug 38, thereby preventing the setscrew from turning.
The clasp 44 is in turn retainedin position by means of the padlock 45, the shaft of which may be passed through the perforation 39 in the head of the set-screw.
46 designates a hood of solid sheet metal, I which is adapted to fit over the outside of the upper portion of the lamp, and which is proj vided at its upper edge with an inturned j flange 47, adapted to rest upon the upper side of the cap 23. The said cap is provided with a notch 48, adapted to engage a lug 49, ex-
tending inwardly from the upper end of the hood 46 below the flange 47 of the latter. It Wlll thus be seen that by causing the lug 49 i to pass through the notch 48 until the flange 47 rests upon the upper side of the cap 23,
and then giving the hood 46 a quarter-turn, it will be locked securely in position. The hood 46 fits at its lower end around the ring 17 of the lamp-body, and it is provided at or near its upper and lower ends with ventilating-perforations 50.
The operation and advantages of my improved safety-lamp will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in con- .nection with the drawings hereto annexed,
by those skilled in the art to which it apperiains. The general construction of the device is simple and inexpensive, and the construction is such as to absolutely prevent access to the flame except by the person having charge of the key of the padlock 45. It will be observed that the flame is guarded by a 27. The asbestus packing between which the.
ends of the glass are fitted will prevent danger of breakage by undue expansion of the glass. It will also be seen that the wick may be conveniently raised or lowered, so as to regulate the flame by manipulating the vertically-sliding rod 10.
I have herein described what I consider the preferred construction of my improved safetylamp; but I would have it understood thatI reserve the right of making any such changes and alterations as maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a safety-lamp, the herein-described safety-hood, comprising the upper cylindrical hood 25, having a conical lower end, the exterior uppercylindrical hood 27, the invertedfrustuin-shaped sheet-metal tube 28, having a gauze-flange 29, said tube 28 being fitted within the conical extension 26 of the hood 25, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In a safety-lamp, the combination, with the body, the lower ring of which is provided with a laterally-extending lug 38, of a setscrew extending through said lug and having a transversely-perforated square head, a U- shaped clasp 44, having a slot 43 to receive the said square head, the lain ybase having an annular flange, and a padlock, all combined, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. The combination, with the lamp-body comprising the rings 17 and 18, the packingrings 32 and 33, the glass 35, the connectingrods, and the cap 23, of the hood 30, the base or oil reservoir, and the exterior cap 46, having an annular-flange 47, an inwardly-extending lug 49, adapted to engage a notch 48 in the cap 23, and perforations 50, all arranged and operating substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W'M. J. MCDOWELL.
