VEHICLE-WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARROLL J. ATKINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cando, in the county of Towner and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Vehicle-Trench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in vehicle wrenches, and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide an easier method for screwing and unscrewing nuts on vehicle axles; second, to securely hold the nut in place and permit of conveniently starting the nut when screwing it on the axle; and third, to keep the nut from falling to the ground when removed from the axle.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the vehicle wrench; F ig. 2 is a vertical section of the vehicle wrench with the nut in position; and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the spring.
The improved vehicle wrench shown is provided with the usual socket A and a handle B for manipulating the wrench, and into the socket extends the free end of a spring C, secured to the handle B, adjacent to the socket A.
The springC, of which a detail view is shown in Fig. 3, is preferably formed of spring wire, bent at its middle into V-shape, and then doubled to form the free end portion C which extends into the socket A and presses against one side of the nut D, and the outer shanks G which pass along the outside of the socket A, the angular terminals C of the shanks C being passed into apertures in the handle B, and bent over, thereby securing them in position.

wrench either in screwing up or unscrewing the nut.
I wish to have it understood that when the nut is unscrewed from the axle with the vehicle wrench shown, the nut is securely held in the socket of the wrench and cannot fall to the ground and become soiled.
It is understood that the improvement as shown and described is not confined to the exact form and shape of the wrench shown in the accompanying drawings, but can be used on various types of vehicle wrenches and nuts.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A vehicle wrench having a socket and a handle, and a spring made of spring Wire having substantially parallel inner members extending within the socket and connected by a cross member and shank members forming a continuation of the said inner members and extending along the outside of the socket, the ends of the shank members being secured to the handle adjacent to its junction withcthe socket.
2. A vehicle wrench having a socket and a handle, the handle having apertures therein adjacent to the top of the socket, and a spring made of spring wire bent into V-shape and doubled up to form a free portion which extends upward into the socket of the wrench, and shank members extending upward outside of the socket, the terminals of the shank members passing through the apertures in the handle of the wrench and having their inner ends bent.
3. A vehicle wrench having a socket, and a handle provided with apertures adjacent to the junction of the handle and socket, and a spring made of spring wire having substantially parallel inner members extending within the socket adjacent to the rear wall and inclining inwardly from said wall, the said members being connected by a cross member, and shank members forming a continnntion 0t sznd inner members and extending' along the outside of the rear Wall of the socket, the shank members having their ends extending through the apertures in the handle and bent over to retain them in position.
