ATTORNEY UNTTED STATES PATENT @FFTQE.
ARTHUR C. STONE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUCKLE Application filed June 12, 1908.
f0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR C. Storm, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Providence, in the county ofProvidence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain I new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to the cross-bars of buckles.
In buckles, particularly of large dimensions, the cross bars are liable to bend or become distorted under the strain of the sash, belt, or band; or to be broken away from the face plate to which they are soldered. The disproportionate quantity and thickness of stock required in such bars also unduly increases the expense of their manufacture. The greatest source of weakness at present is the hook portion upon which the strain particularly centers. The rough square edges of the present bars also cut, mutilate, and ruin the fabric of the sash or band.
The purpose of this invention is to correct the above enumerated weaknesses and defects, and to attain the desired advantages 1 in a simple and inexpensive structure, to
g which ends essentially my invention conslsts Fig. 2, a section of the same on line 00 m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, a bottom plan of the blank after its edges have been rolled. Fig. 4, a section of the same on line y y of Fig. 3. Fig. 5, a side elevation of the blank provided with undercuts and having one end bent. Fig. 6, a bottom plan of the same. Fig. 7, a top plan View of the complete bar mounted upon the buckle plate, and Fig. 8, end elevation of the same.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
The cross bar is made by forming in the center of an oblong plate of metal, A, a longitudinally disposed flattened lip, B, V- shaped in' cross section. This lip is formed by successively punching with a V-shaped tool the center of the blank to form a longitudinal cup and forcing or compressing by swaging dies or otherwise the side wall, I) Z), of the cup into contact with each other leaving only the portion 5 adjacent the base hol- Specification of Letters Patent.

low. Figs. 1 and 2 show the blank after the described treatment. The lateral edges of the blank are trimmed, drawn, and bent or rolled under the blank into marginal tubes or beads, C. Each of these tubes then have their lower faces sawed or undercut near both ends to form V-sha'ped cavities, 0, which permit the ends, 0, of the blank to be bent downwardly and at right angles to the blank forming legs or supports. In Figs. 5 and 6, one of the legs is shown bent into final position. The supports or legs, 0, are bored before or after bending to form eyes, 0 for re ceiving attaching threads for the belt strip. The tongue, B, is then bent into hook form, and the legs, 0, have their ends fixed by solder to the rear face of the usual buckle plate, D.
By this construction, it will be seen that the lateral tubes or ribs, C, impart a stiffness to the plate which prevents any bending thereof under strain, and present no abrasive surface to the fabric, and that a broad soldering surface is likewise afforded at the ends of the legs. Furthermore, that the folded character of the hook, B, provides a maximum of strength and resistance at the point of the greatest strain. comparatively thin stock may be used in a crossbar constructed as described.
hat I claim is,
1. A buckle cross-bar comprising a body portion, a hook upon the body portion, and integral tubular margins upon the body portion.
A buckle cross-bar comprising a body portion, a hook upon the body portion, legs upon the body portion, integral tubular margins upon the body portion, and integral tubular margins upon the legs.
3. A buckle cross-bar comprising a body portion, a hook upon the body portion, integral marginal tubes upon the body provided with cavities near their ends, integral legs upon the ends of the body, integral tubes upon the margins of the legs adapted to enter the cavities.
4:. A. buckle cross-bar comprising an oblong body portion and a hook integral therewith and provided with folded walls compressed therefrom.
5. A. buckle cross-bar comprising a body portion and an integral flattened folded lip bent to form a hook.
6. A buckle cross-bar comprising a body portion having integral therewith a recessed portion with flattened sides bent to form a hook.
7. A buckle cross-bar comprising a body portion, a hook integral with the center of the body and compressed therefrom comprising a closed end and hollow base.
8. A buckle cross-bar comprising a body portion having integral therewith a recessed portion with flattened sides bent to form a hook, and integral tubular margins upon the body portion.
9. 'A buckle crossbar comprising a body portion having integral therewith a recessed portion with flattened sides bent to form a hook, integral tubular margins upon the body portion, and legs integral with the body portion provided with tubular margins.
10. A buckle cross-bar comprising a body 1 portion having integral therewith a recessed portion with flattened sides bent to form a hook, integral marginal tubes upon the body provided with undercut portions near their ends, and legs integral with the ends of the body provided with inturned marginal portions adapted to enter the undercut portion 7 of the tubes.
11. In abuckle, the combination with the buckle plate, of a cross-bar comprising a body having inbent lateral marginsprovided' 12. In a buckle, the combination with the.
buckle plate, of a cross-bar comprising a body having integral therewith a recessed portion with flattened sides bent to form a hook, integral legs upon the body fixed to the buckle plate, and integral tubes upon the margins of the body and of the legs.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
