Description

J. W. BRADY." TRACK SAN-DER, APPLICATION Putin-11.1221, 190a.
909,056. Patented Jan. 5, 1909.
UNITED STATEE'S IAPATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. BRADY, OF NEODESHA, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ELIAS M. WALKER,
OF NEODESHA, KANSAS,
TRACK-SANDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1909.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. BRADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at N eodesha, in the county of Wilson and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Track-Sanders, of which the following is a s ecifioation.
This invention re ates to track sanding devices and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide simple and eflicient means for depositing sand upon either track at the sides of a locomotive by means of air connections leading to the locomotive cab.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sanding device into which the air pi e leading from the auxiliary reservoir of the truck system to the sanding device shall have no abrupt corners to obstruct the air in operating the device, and wherein the air pipe nozzle is arranged below the sand outlet thereby preventing the moisture from the air passing through the nozzle coming in contact with the sand opening.
To these ends the invention resides in the novel construction of elements and their arrangement in operative combination hereinafter fully described and claimed,
Figure 1 is an elevation'of asanddome of a locomotive, showing the same provided with my improvement, and, Fig. 21s a detail vertical section of my improvement.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates. a casing or dome for containing sand, said casing being provided with a suitable cover 2, and the said dome being positioned upon the top of the locomotive boiler 3. Air pipes 4 leading from the auxiliary reservoir within the cab pass through fittin s 5 secured to the wall of the casing 1. Eac of the air pipes 4 is pro vided with a suitable outlet pipe 6 positioned upon each side of the dome 1 in a manner similar to that described in my pat ented. device Number 877,828. These out let pipes 6 project a suitable distance away fromthe dome and are provided with a right angular extension 7 having an enlargement or collar 8 at its extremity. A union 9 is provided upon the vertical oiiset of the outet pi e and is adapted to engage the collar 8 anti a nozzle 10. This nozzle 10 is provided with a suitable shoulder 11 and a screw threaded ortion projecting downwardly from said s oulder and adapted for engagement with the upper internal threads of a T coupling 12 the lower threaded opening of the coupling 12, is provided with suitable threads adapted for the engagement of the threaded portion of the outlet ipe 13. The offset member 14 of the coup in 12 is adapted to extend upwardly at an ang e and towards the dome 1. The mouth of theT coupling 12 is adapted to lie in a plane below the reduced mouth of the nozzle 10.
The sand outlet or hood 15 is provided with athreaded extension 16 adapted for the rece tion of the shank 17 upon the exterior of t e dome 1. with an annular shoulder 18, and a union 19 secured upon the shank 17 is ada ted to engage the shoulder of the threade extremity 20 of the offset 14. A suitable lock nut- 21 is provided upon the threaded ortion of the sand outlet upon the interior 0 the dome and is adapted to retain the outlet hood in secure en agement with the casing.
The hood, comprising the sand outlet employed wlth my device is constructed of a rounded top and has its bottom cut away a suitable distance to provide an outlet mouth 22. j j
The 0 eration of my device is as follows It will e understood that the sand in the casing 1 W111 not be fed through the outlet pipes excepting when air is rojected through the air pipes and throug the nozzle 10. Whenever it is desired to sand the tracks, the engineer opens the valve to project air through the pipes 4 and 6, and the air passes through the nozzle at right angles to the sand pipe connection which draws the sand through the said pipe and projects it through the sandy ipes 13 to the track.
It will e noted that by the construction of theT 12 having the air nozzle 10 and its offset member 14 arranged away from the air nozzle and atan angle so as to position the sand outlet pipe above the nozzle, the point of the inflow of air is below the sand outlet 1 opening and thus all moisture from the air passing through the nozzle is prevented from Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A sanding device comprising a casing 01' dome, air pipes leadin into the casing or dome and out through t e sides thereof, nozzles fitted to said air pipes, said nozzles being fitted in couplings having an offset member The shank 17 is provided Cir coming in contact with the sand outlet open- 1 extending upwardly away from the nozzle so the ofi's'et member being arranged at an angle as to have its inner passage above the outlet to the vertical member so that its passage of the nozzle, an outlet pipe connected to the will. be above the outlet of the nozzle, a sand 15 Vertical member of the coupling and a sand outlet connected to the offset member, said outlet connected to the offset member and outlet having a rounded deflector provided extending within the dome. with a reduced mouth upon its lower face.
2-, In a sanding device, a dome air pipes In testimony whereof I affix my signature connected to said dome and extending u in presence of two witnesses. Wardly upon opposite sides thereof, a nozz e JOHN W. BRADY connected to the outlet pi es, a coupling con- Witnesses: neeted to saidnozzle, sal v coupling c0mpr1s WILLIAM NORMAN, mg a vertical member and an offset member, A V. SI-IARPE.
