TRACK-SANDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 25. 1907- Serial No. 375.671.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. BRADY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Neodesha, in the county of Wilson, and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Track-Sanding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to track sanding devices, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide simple and efficient means for depositing sand upon either track at the sides of a locomotive by means of air connections leading to the locomotive cab.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sanding device in which the air pipe leading from the auxiliary reservoir of the brake system to the sanding device shall have no abrupt angular corners to obstruct the course of the air in operating the device.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means for quickly cleaning the air nozzles of any obstruction.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sanding device made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 22, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the sanding device. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section of the air nozzle, the sand pipe connection thereto, and the hood or deflector. Fig. 5 is a detail front elevation of the hood or deflector.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a casing or dome for containing sand, said casing being provided with a suitable cover 2, and said dome being properly secured upon the top of the locomotive boiler 3. Air pipes 4 leading from the auxiliary reservoir in the cab pass through a fitting 5 secured to the wall of the casing 1, said air pipe being provided with diverging branches 6, and said branches being connected to fittings 7 connected to two-way plugs 8 in which are secured pipes 9, said pipes each having a curved portion 10, and said pipes extending out at the sides of the casing 1, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2. The air pipes 9 are secured to the casing 1 by perforated disks 11, one placed upon the inner side and one upon the outer side of the casing 1. The outer ends of the pipes 9 are provided with curved diverging ends 12, and fitted to said ends are nozzles 13, each having a removable plug 14 in its upper end which may be readily detached for clearing the nozzle of an obstruction. The lower end of the nozzle has a restricted outlet opening 15, said nozzle being fitted into the upper end of a T- coupling 16 to which is attached the sand outlet pipe 17. Connected to the horizontal branch of the T-coupling 16 is the sand pipe connection 18 which passes through the wall of the casing 1, and is properly held in place by lock nuts 19. Fitted to the inner end of the pipe connection 18 inside the casing 1 is a hood 20 having inclined upper walls 21, vertical side walls 22, and an open bottom 23.
It is to be noted that there aretwo hoods or deflectors upon eachside of the dome or casing 1, and it will be understood that the sand outlet pipes 17 are oppositely curved to extend around the front and rear of the locomotive wheels upon opposite sides of the locomotive.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows: It will be understood that'the sand in the casing 1 will not feed through the pipes 17 excepting when air is projected through the air pipes and through the nozzles 13. Whenever it is desired to sand the tracks, the engineer opens the valve to project air through the pipes 4, 9 and 10, and the air passes through the nozzles 13 at ri ht angles to the sand pipe connection 18 w ich draws the sand through said pipe and projects it out through the sand pipes 17 to the track.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my invention is of a simple character; that the tracks may be sanded at any time, and the feed cut off when not required; that the air nozzle 13 can be quickly cleared of an obstruction, and that the device as a whole is efficient for the purpose designed.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A sanding device comprising a casing or dome, air pipes leading into the casing or dome and out through the sides thereof, nozzles fitted to said air pipes, said nozzles being fitted in couplings connected to the sand pipes, and hoods connected to the sand pipes inside the casing or dome.
2. In a sanding device, the combination of air pipes, a casing, said air pipes extending transversely across and through the Walls of the casing, air nozzles fitted to said ipes and extending into couplings to which the sand ipes are connected, and removable plugs fltted in the upper ends of the nozzles.
3. In a sanding device, the combination of a casing, air pipes leading from the cab into the casing, said air pipes being curved and branched, pipes connected to each branch and havin curved divergent portions leading out tl drough the sides of the casing, nozzles fitted to said pipes outside the casing, said nozzles being fitted to couplings communicating Withv t e interior of the casing, and deflectors or hoods secured to said sand pipesv inside the casing.
4. In: a sanding device, the combination of a casing, air pipes leading out throu h the sides of said casing and provided Wit nozzles, removable plugs in said nozzles, sand pipes leading into the casing and provided With deflectors, the outlets of said nozzles being disposed at right angles to said sand pipes.
5. In a sanding device, the combination of casing and the air brake system of the locomotive, nozzles on the ends of said air pipes,
