UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIc CHARLES P. WEISS, OF HORNELLSVILLE, NEW YORK.
SAND-BOX FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 605,803, dated June 14, 1898.
Application filed January 26, 1898. Serial No. 668,053. (No model.)
To aZZ whom/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. WEIss, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Boxes for L0- comotives; and I do hereby declare the following tobea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to sand-boxes for comotives; and its object'is to provide improved means under the control of the engineer for blowing the sand through the sand,- openings for distributing it on the track.
The invention consists, essentially, in 10 eating an air-blast pipe in the sand-box provided with nozzles in close proximity to the sand-openings, which communicate with the pipes which carry the sand to the-track, and the cock of said air-pipe being so connected with the lever for operating the sand-valves that the latter will be opened in advance of the said cock, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side. elevation ofa locomotive sand-box,
showing my improvements applied thereto.
Fig. 2'is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is adetail view of the T-coupling. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the lever mechanism.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the locomotive-boiler, and 2 the sand-box, formed with chambers 3 at opposite sides, the inner walls of which are provided with sand-openings 4. These chambers communicate with the pipes 5, leading to the rails.
The numeral 6 designates rotatable valves secured to the shaft 7, provided with a crank 8, connected by a rod 9 with the operatinglever 10 under control of the engineer. These valves are formed with openings 12, adapted to coincide with the openings 4: when the lever 10 is operated to sand the tracks. The parts so far described may be of any ordinary or suitable construction, as in themselves they form no part of my invention. Also located in said box and supported by brack-' ets13 is a curved pipe 14, made in two sec tions, the inner ends of which are connected by aT-coupling 15 and the outer ends formed or provided with nozzles 16, so disposed as to point directly toward the sand openings. The said T-coupling is also provided with a rearwardly-extending pipe 17, connected with a compressed air reservoir (not shown) and provided with a stop-cock 18, the stem ofwhich is provided with a crank 19, connected by a rod with the sand-lever 10. This. cock is so constructed that the sandvalves will be opened in advance thereof, so that if the sand-openings are not clogged or congested the air blast or current will not be turned on; but if said passages are clogged then a further pull upon the lever will open the cock, so that air-jets will be directed in the sand -openings, cleaning the same and causing the'sand to be carried downto the rails.
r I do not limit myself to any particular location of the sand-openings, and they may be formed in the bottom of the sand-b0x,.nor do I wish to be confined to any particular construction and arrangement of the sand-valves, as the invention may be employed in connection with any of the sand-boxes now in general use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- ,l 5
In a sand-box for locomotives provided with sand-openings and sand-pipes leading thereopened by said lever after the latter has opened the sand-valves.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES P. WEISS. Witnesses:
H. K. BROWN, I MILES W. HAWLEY.
