VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1911.
Application filedJune 3, 1911. Serial No. 631,172.
TooZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. WnvNow, a
citizen of the United States of-America, and v a resident of Mobile, county of Mobile, and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the followin is a full and clear specification, reference being ha'dto the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved valve; Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 a similar view at right angles to the line on whichFig. 2 is taken; and Fig. 4 a horizontal sectional view The object of this invention is to providea simple and inexpensive th1'ee\vay valve which shall be especially adapted for use.
on steam locomotives for the purpose of throwing the steam into the ash pan to blow the ashes out, the construction being such that the valve will wear its own seat and may be readily'maintained in a non-leaking condition, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters a, designates a cylindrical valve casing whose bottom is closed by an integral wall 6 and whose top is closed by a disk 0 screwed thereinto, this disk being provided with an angular or nut-like projection to receive a wrench. This valve casing is pro vided with three openings in its-side wall and each of these openings is provided with a threaded nipple e adapted for connection to the inlet and outlet pipes.
Fitting within the casing is a hollow lindrical valve plug 1 having formed in 11;
vertical wall a series of three openings spaced apart to adapt them to be brought into register with the several openings in the valve casing. 'The bottom of this plug is closed by a solid wall 9, which around its edge bears down upon an upwardly facing annular seat It raised slightly from the bottom wall. The upper end of this plug is closed by a solid intcgralfiwall i, and rising centrally from this Wall is a cylindrical stem 7' which ex tends up and out through the center of the disk 0. The disk 0, on top of its angular projection d, is provided with a stuffing box 70 of any suitable type. The disk 0 has its under side hollowed out at Z forming an annular seat m which bears down upon the upper face of the top wall 2'. I
In the position shown in the drawing the plug is positioned so that all the valve open-,
lugs communicate with each other. By a quarter turn in either direction it will be observed that either of the lateral or alined openings maybe cut off from the middle opening while the other lateral openings will communicate with said middle opening, a suitable segmental part f ofthe wall being provided for thus closing one of the alined openings. To stop the valve plug in either ot these latter positions, I provide a stop lug odepending fromv the bottom of the valve plug near one edge thereof and provide the bottom wall of the valve casing with an up \vardly projecting transverse shoulder n, so positioned that the lug 0 will strike against the shoulder when the plug either direction to close one of thelateral openings.
Having thus described my invention, what I- claim as new and desire to secure by Let: ters Patent, is-
In a valve, the combination of a cylindrical casing having a series of openings in its side wall and having its bottom closed and its top provided with a threaded opening, said bottom wall being provided with a. raised upwardly facing anniilar seat around its edge, a hollow cylindrical valve plug fitting in said casing and having its bottom closed and provided with an annular seat adapted to abut against the upwardly facing seat of the bottom wall of the casing, the upper end of said plug being closed and provided with a central stem, and a closure disk surrounding said stem and screwed into the upper end of the valve casing, this closure disk being provided .with an annular downwardly facing seat bearing directly against the upper'end of the valve plug, this disk being provided with a stufling box which surrounds the aforesaid stem.
In testimony whereof I hereunto alfix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
J OHN JOSEPH WINNOW. Witnesses: W. E; LEMP,
A. M. PAYNE.
