VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 783,312, dated February 21, 1905. Application filed December 31, 1903- Serial No. 187,837.
To call 1011 0111, it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM C. RIFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pember ville, in the county of Food and State of Ohio, have invented 2. Valve, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in valves, and relates more especially to the class of three-way valves or those which are adapted to direct the flow from the supply-pipe into either one of two distributing-pipes and to entirely shut off the flow.
The objects of the invention are to provide a valve of this particular character which shall be simple and effective in construction, durable in use, and in which the parts may be readily adjusted to properly take up for wear.
iVith these objects in viewthe invention con templates the provision of a peculiarly-constructed valve-casing and turning-plug, the latter having a single straight opening therethrough and the former provided with three openings for the supply and distributing pipes, respectively, and with an auxiliary passage extending from the supply-opening to a point opposite one of the distributing-pipe openings, the casing having means for attaching the aforesaid pipes thereto, as -well as means for operating the turning-plug and for adjusting the same, all as hereinafter fully described, and more specifically set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a valve constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail "iew of the turningplug. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the walls against which the turning-plug bears.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures of the drawings.
A designates the valve-casing, which is provided,as is usual, with a central tapered opening a for the valve-plug B and at three sides thereof is provided with direct openings, as a, a and a communicating with the central opening a and adapted at their outer ends for pipe connections. The openings at and a are directly opposite eachother, while the opening a is to one side of the casing or at right angles to the aforesaid openings.
The distributing-pipes I) and-E are threaded in the outer ends of the openings (4 and a respectively, as is usual, while in providing the pipe connection or union for the supplypipe C, which communicates with the opening a, the valve-casing is, at the outer end of said opening, formed with an annular flange (0 to which is bolted a ring F, and into the opening of this ring the pipe 0 is threaded. This provides a larger opening at the receiving end of the casing, forming practically a chamber a, and extending from one side of this chamber to the central opening a at a point directly opposite the opening a is an auxiliary passage a, whereby separate inletopenings are provided on a line with each distributing-pipe.
The turning-plug B is provided with a single straight opening I), extend ing diametrically through the same, and said plug is held in place by a nut 2', threaded on the lower end thereof, and between which nut and the casing is a washer d, as is usual. The upper end of the plug is squared to receive the operating-handle B.
In providing the opening a and auxiliary passage a a vertical wall 70, reduced at its ends, as at h, is disposed in the casing and seated in recesses in the top and bottom thereof, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and said wall, in conjunction with the opposite wall (a of the casing, form the parts which close the opening in the plug when the valve is shut off. The wall it may be readily removed and renewed when desired.
In the operation of the valve when the plug is turned to bring the opening therein on a line with the openings (0 and a the flow from the"supplypipe will pass straight through the valve into the distributingpipe D and communication with the pipe E will be entirely shut off. Now when it is desired to turn the flow into the pipe E and cut off the pipeD the plug is given a quarter-turn, which will bring the opening therein on a line with the openings (0 and a and the flow will pass by way of the auxiliary passage through the plug to the distributing-pipe E. To close the valve or shut off the flow through the I same, the plug is turned to bring the opening therein on a line with the walls l1, and (0 By reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings it will will be seen that the handle B is attached to the plug B with respect to the opening in the latter parallel therewith, so that the position of the handle will indicate the position of the valve. For instance, if the lever is arranged as in full lines, Fig. 1that is, on a line with the pipe Eit will indicate that communication with said pipe E is open, and similarly when turned on a line with the pipe D it will indicate that communication with the latter is established, and when turned to the intermediate position the valve is closed.
The valve is intended for application to steam and water fittings and, in fact, wherever a valve of this nature is required.
By the arrangement shown and described the plug is provided with but a single straight opening which does not materially weaken the plug, and the disposition of the bearingwalls provides for conveniently taking up wear, so that the life of the valve is materially lengthened;
It will be noted that the auxiliary passage (0* is of the same size as the opening a and is curved, so that the flow to the distributingpipes will be the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi A three-way valve, comprising a casing having a central opening therein for the plug and recesses in the top and bottom at one side of said central opening, distributing-openings a and (L3 in two sides of the casing and extending therein at right angles to each other, an inlet opening or chamber opposite one of said distributing-openings, and an auxiliary passage extending through the casing from the intermediate portion of the inlet opening or chamber to the central opening at a point opposite the other of said distributing-openings, a wall b reduced at its ends and seated in the recesses in the top and bottom of the casing opposite the wall a combined with the turning-plug having a straight opening therethrough, and the handle attached to said plug on a line with said opening, as herein shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
