To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES T. LANGLEY and EDWIN THOMAS, citizens of the United States, the former residing at Portland, 1n
the county of Multnomah, the latter at La Grande, in the county of Union, both in the State of Oregon, have jointly invented a new and useful improvement in Globe- Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to a class of valves used for general purposes and particularly in and with boilers and steam heaters.
The object of our invention is to provide avalve of the globe type in which the valve canbe ground in its seat without removing the valve, also wherein a seat ;is formed above the valve, to prevent any leakage about the valve being packed.
Our device is simple, cheap, and can be applied in any valve.
W'e attain the objects stated, as well as other advantages by the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which forms a part hereof.
The figure incur-drawing illustrates a valve of the globe type, and our invention will now be more particularlydescribed in connection with the figure shown.. This figure is a vertical section through the center of the device.
As illustrated, 1 indicates, as a whole, a It is divided by a diaphragm 2, into chambers 3 and 4. The chamber 3 communicates with the outlet port 5, and the chamber 4 with the inlet port 6 of said valve. The diaphragm 2 is provided with a centrally disposed opening or passage 7. In the upper part of this passage is formed avalve seat 8, which is adapted to receive a valve. A neck 9 is formed in the upper part of the casing 1. The neck :is externally threaded with a thread 10. A nut 11,. provided with an internal thread, is adapted to be received on the neck 9. The nut 11 has a vertical opening12 through its top. A vertical gland 13 is placed within the neck 9. The gland 13 has a circular shoulder 14% near its lower end adapted to engage the upper end of the neck 9 and the top of the nut 11. The valve spindle 18 as a whole, comprises two members 19 and 19. The member 19.has a cylindrical part 20 on its lower end, which part is adapted to be received within the gland passage 17. Above the part .20 the member 19 has .1 an external larger vertical pasthread 16. The cylindrical part 20 has a female part 22 of a T-joint near its. upper slot 23 extending through its sides. On the upper end of the member 19 is an operating whee124.
i The member 19 has a flat central part adapted to be received within the slot 23. The edges of the flat central part of the member 19 are flush with the sides of the cylindrical part. member 19 is formed the male part 25 of a Tjoint,the same being adapted to be received within the female part 22 of the member 19. The male part 25 is of suitably lesser dimension vertically than the female part 22 of the T-joint. On the lower end of the member 19 there is formed a valve 8. The valve is also beveled on its upper side so it may be received in the upper seat 17 of the gland 13. The direction of the flow of fluid is indicated by arrows.

Upon operating the hand-wheel 24: to open or close the valve it is first rotated in its it in place, before it leaves the seat. This is accomplished by reason of the T-joint, the male part being of less dimension, so allowing for a suitable play in the joint. It will be further observed that in our device we have provided an upper seat in the gland and that the valve can be held per part, and is adapted to receive a thread-. ed valvespindle. without shutting off the flow of fluid through the shell.
Having thus described oury devicewe' claim:
1. A valve, comprising a shell provided with a diaphragm forming two compartments respectively communicating with the inlet and outletof the valve, said diaphragln having a centrally disposed horizontal, portion provided with an opening with a valve side of seat surrounding it. .on the upper the diaphragm, a vertical shell neck above the valve seat, a gland securable on the shell neck internally threaded near itsupper end and having a continuous verflush with the cylindrical part of saidspindle, a valve on the lower end of. said central part formed to adapt it to be TGCGIVGCl in the aforesaid upper and lower valve seats,
also the male part of a T-joint in the upper end of said central part of'lesser vertical dimension than the aforesaid female part,
and meansto operate the spindle, substantially as described. v
' 2. A valve, comprising a" shell'provided with a diaphragm forming two compart- 40 ments respectively communicating with the inlet and outlet of the valve, said diaphragm having a centrally disposed horizontal portion provided with an opening with a valve seat surrounding it on the upper side of the diaphragm, a vertical shell neck above the valve seat, a gland securable on the shell neck internally threaded near its upper end and having a continuous vertical cylindrical passage below the threaded part, a valve spindle within the gland composed of an upper vertical member threaded near its central part, its lower part being cylindrical with a vertical slot extending through the sides of the same and with the female part of a T-joint in the upper end of said slot, also a lower member comprising a flat cen tral part which extends through the slot and the edges of; which are flush with the cylindrical part of said spindle, a valve '60 on the lowerend of said central part formed to adapt it to be received in the aforesaid valve seat, also the male partof a'T-joint in the upper end of said central part of lesser vertical dimension than the aforesaid female part, and means to operate the spindle, substantially as described.
