SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 690,490, dated January 7, 1902.
Application filed May 4, 1901.
T to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WALTERs, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of London, in the county of Middlesex, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Renewable-Seat Valve, of which the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forms a full clear, and exact description.
This invention consists of a detachable valve-seat and improved means whereby said valve-seat may vbe readily, easily, and instantly removed or firmly secured-in position; and it also consists of the improved construction and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a globe-valve embodying this invention. In this view a central section of the lower portion of the valve is shown. Fig. 2 is a detail central sectional view of the valve chamber or body. Fig. 3 is a detail plan and side elevation of the follower. Fig. 4. is a detail plan and side view, one-half of the latter being shown in section, of the detachable valve-disk. Fig. 5 is a detail side and plan View, one-half of 'the former being shown in section,of the detachable valveseat.
In the accompanying drawings thenumeral 1 designates the valve chamber or body, and 2 an opening in a boss formed on one side (here the top) thereof, in the interior face of which opening a screw-thread is formed.
3 designates a flat partition in said valve chamber or body,which divides the latter into two compartments 4. and 5.
6 designates an opening in said partition 3, which is the only means of communication between said compartments 4 and'5, and 7 designates a flange formed on and rising above the upper face of said partition 3 around said opening 6, and said flange is fitted to the opening 8 in the detachable valve-seat 8.
8 designates a detachable annular valveseat, which is thicker at its inner edge than the height of said flange 7 on the partition and which has a central opening 8 of a size to surround said flange on its exterior. This Serial No. 58,816. (No model.)
seat itself has a horizontal outwardly-projecting flange 9, which rests upon the partition 3, and while the entire valve-seat may be made of brass,copper,or other suitable material I preferably make it of a composition of White-metal, either hard or soft, the hard white-metal giving the best results when used for high-pressure steam and the soft whitemetal giving the best results when used for cold water.
'10 designates a cylindrical follower,in which the longitudinal bore or opening 11 and the lateral openings 12 are formed, the area of the latter openings being not less than the area of the valve-opening 6 in the partition 3, and said follower is preferably screwthreaded on its exterior face to engage the threads within the opening 2 of the boss, than which latter the followeris somewhat longer, so that it projects above the boss, as seen'in Fig. 1.
.13 designates a bonnet, screw-threaded on its interior face, which is fitted to and engages with the screw-thread on the exterior face of the follower at its upper end.
14 designatesa screw-threaded valve-stem which extends through, is fitted to, and engages with a screw-threaded socket in said bonnet 13.
15 designates a handle on the outer end, and 16 ahead on the inner end,of saidvalvestem, and 17 designates a packing-nut which engages with the extension 18 of the bonnet, between which extension and the nut 17 a packing is interposed and held firmly around the valve-stem, as well understood to (form a perfectly tight joint at this point and at the same time permit the valve-stem to turn freely.
19 designates a detachable valve-disk, in which the socket 20 is formed and extending from one side into which is the lateral opening 21, and the head 16 on the lower end of the valve-stem 14 is fitted rotarily to and inserted in the socket 20 of said valve-disk 19 through the lateral opening 21, the shoulders seat.

The dilferent parts are placed in position as follows: The detachable valve-seat 8 is placed on the partition 3around the opening 6, and the flange 7 around said opening 6 being fitted to the opening 8 of said valve-seat 8, the latter is held concentrically with said opening 6 and in line with the follower and valve-disk. The follower 10 is then inserted and turned into the body 1 through the opening 2 by a short bar engaging with the sockets 10, formed in said follower 10, until the lower end of said follower rests on and binds the flange 9 of the detachable valve-seat 8 firmly against the partition the detachable valve-seat 8 in position, when by turning the bonnet 13 on the upper end of the follower 1O until the opposite faces of said bonnet l3 and body 1 bind on one another said bonnet 13 will be secured to said body, at the same time serving as a jam-nut to avoid and completely prevent any accidental displacement of said follower or valve -seat,when by rotating the valve-stem the valve-disk may be adjusted to permit or prevent the passage of steam, water, or other fi-uid through the opening 6, and the turning olf and on of the bonnet and out and in of the follower being all that is necessary to do in order to remove or replace the valve seat or disk either or both said valve seat and disk may be readily, easily, and instantly removed or firmly secured in position, and said follower 10 connecting said body 1 and bonnet 13 together the adjacent faces of said bonnet and body bind on one another and will act as a jamnut to bind the whole rigidly together, and thus avoid and completely prevent any accidental displacement of the follower or valves This invention has been shown and described in connection with a globe-valve but it may be used with equal advantage in connection with other classes of valves.
I have found by experiment that the construction herein shown and described gives the best results. At the same time, while I prefer said construction, I do not wish to limit myself to the details thereof, as they may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a removable-seat valve, the combination with the valve-chamber having a flat partition provided with an opening, and a flange rising from said partition close around said This firmly secures opening; of a removableseat comprising an annular body thicker than the height of said flange which it surrounds closely, and itself having a horizontal flange resting uponsaid partition, a cylindrical follower having lateral openings near its lower end which latter rests upon said horizontal flange, an internally-threaded boss on the valve-casing, exterior threads on the follower engaging Within said boss above which the follower projects, an internally-threaded bonnet screwed upon the upper end of the follower and against said boss, the valve-disk within the follower, and devices extending through the bonnet for closing said disk upon the valveseat and removing it therefrom when desired.
2. In a removable-seat valve, the combination with the valve-chamber havinga flat partition provided with an opening, of a removable seat comprising an annular body and a horizontal flange resting upon said partition, a cylindrical follower having lateral openings near its lower end which latter rests uponsaid flange, an internally-threaded boss on the valve-casing, exterior threads on the follower engaging within said boss above which the follower projects, an internally-threaded bonnet screwed upon the upper end of the follower and against said boss, the valve-disk within the follower, and devices extending through thebonnet forclosing said disk upon the valveseat and removing it therefrom when desired.
3. In a removable-seat valve, the combination with the valve-chamber having a flat partition provided with an opening, of a removable seat comprising an annular body and a horizontal flange resting upon said partition, a cylindrical follower having lateral openings near its lower end which latter rests u ponsaid flange, an internally-threaded boss on the valve-casing, exterior threads on the follower engaging within said boss above which the follower projects, an internally-threaded bonnet screwed upon the upper end of the follower and against said boss, the valve-disk within the follower, the threaded valve-stem passing through the bonnet and having a head at its lower end, and a socket on the disk com prising flanges engaging said head and having a lateral opening through which the head can be removed when the stem and disk are withdrawn from the valve-casing.
