DRESS-FORM.
No. 9os,eio.
'i To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. UFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of/Suilolky and State of'Massachusetts, 'have invented an Im rovement in Dress Forms, of which the ollowing description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters Ion the drawing representin like parts.
This invention relates to j ress forms which are made in sections and which are made adjustable relative to each other for varying or changing thesize of the form, and one of the objects of theinvention isto rovide a novel and simple wa .of adjustab y securing the i place.
way of detachabl Another object is to provide an adjustable form in which the bust portion of the forml may be adjusted Withoutchanging or adjust- 'ing the other .portions thereof.
Still another object is to provide a novel securing the arm of the form;l and Vother o jects are to improve generally th -form in other particulars herein- Inthe drawings, Figure 1 1s a vertical section through the form showing the inside of the front half of the form Fi 2. is a similar section showing the inside of t e back half of the form; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the arm showing its manner of adjustment to the form; Fig. 4 is a section .on the line x-x,
` Fig.
Fig. 3'; Fig. l5 is a vertical section through the jorm on substantially the line y,-y, Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 6 shows-the manner of adjusting the bottom; Fig. 7 shows a modiiication oi' the construction in Fi 6; Fig. Sis a vertical central section throug a portion of the front of the form. Y
The form herein shown is divided verti- I. cally from side to side through the shoulders on the line afa, Fig. 5, to form front and rear halves; it is also divided vertically from front to rear at each side the center, as 'at b, and 2, and is divided horizontally across the bust.
shoulder sections 3, 4, the ack neck section 5,-the back waist sections 6, 7 and 8, as shown in Fig. 2; and the front half shown in 1 presents the front shoulder sections 3, the front neck section 5?, and the front Waist sections 6, 7a and 8.
For adjustably connecting the shoulder' When a form is divided in this manner the back half presents .the back Patented Jan. 5, 1909.
sections to the neck section I have provided a construction which not only holds the 'shoulder sections properly spacedfrom the neck sections, but also serves to guide said shoulder sections as they are ad'usted toward and from the neck sections. T e device herein shown for accomplishing this comprises a slotted member 1() secured to the shoulder section and overlying a second slotted member 11 secured to the neck seetion. These slotted members are clamped together by means of clamping bolts 90, and the slotted members 10 have studs 91 rigid therewith which play in the slots of the member 11. By this construction, the shoulder' section is always maintained in its proper position relative to the neck section and may also be clam ed to hold it properly s aced from the neel; section. 92 are other slbtted members which are secured to the neck seetions both front and rear at the lower edge thereof, and which are adjustably secured to the lower corners ofthe shoulder sections by clamping bolts 93.
The side Waist sections are secured to the central Waist section on both front and back by means of slotted members 12 each of.
which is rigidly secured at onevend to the corresponding waist section. These two slotted members 12 for either the front orthe rear overla each other on the inside of the correspon in waist section and are clamped thereto y means of a clamping bolt 13. The adjacent shoulder sections 4, 4a, 3, 3a, are also adjustably securedutogether by means of suitable slotted members 14 each of which is rigidly s ecuredf to one shoulder section and overlies the other adjacent shoulder section and is fastened thereto by means of a clamping bolt l5, and the same .construction is employed for adjustably securing together adjacent Waist: sections, one of two adjacent Waist sections having the slotted member 17 secured thereto and overlving the other waist section and secured thereto\ by `m`eans `of a clamping bolt 18.
For adjustably securing the sections above the horizontal division line to those below said division line, I propose to employ other slotted members 19, 20, the members 19 being rigidly secured to the rear shoulder sections and overlapping the rear waist sections and preferablysecured thereto by the clamping olts 18, and the slotted members 20 being rigidly secured to the front waist secform that the bust portion thereof may be f sections 8, 7a and 6a, an( I have so conjustment of the other portions of the form.
rigidly secured theretova slotted member 28@ a novel way of detachably securing the. `arm 'the said slotted member 28, and the bustiwhieh'is made fast to the sectlon 25. The sections 24 and 26 each have slotted meintions and extending upwardly and being seg cured to the front shoulder sections by the clamping bolts 15. In addition, the back necksection 5 has rigidly secured thereto a slotted member 21 which extends downwardly and overlies the middle back waist section 7 and is adjustably secured thereto by the clamping bolt 13. IVit-h this construction the l'orm can be adjustedto lengthen or shorten the shoulders, increase or. decrease the size of the waist or of the bust, and also lengthen the waist, and any one of these adjustments can be made inde endently of the other adjustments-or simu taneously therewith. In addition to these adjustments, I have so constructed my dress raised* or lowered independentlyT of adjustments of other sections, or may be expanded or contracted independently. To accomplish this I divide the front half of thel form orizontally in two places, as at c and d, see Fig. 1.` When the form is divided in this manner it com rises the shoulder neck ortion including t e sections 4, 5, 3a, the ust portion including the'sections 24, 25 and 26, and the waist portion com rising the 4waist structed the bust portion that it may be adjusted vertically without disturbing the ad- As shown in Fig. 1, the neck section 5*x has W 'ch extends downwardly to overlap the central bust section .25,and the central waist section 7 a has secured thereto a slotted member 29 which extends upwardly to overlap section 25 is clamped to these two slotted members by means of a clamping bolt 30 bers Stsecured thereto and extending 1n wardly therefrom which overlie the central section 25'and are also secured thereto by the clamping bolt 30.
Referring now to Fig. 8, it will be seen that the slotted members 28 and 29 are curved and refcrably the member 28 cX- tends throu(r a loop or guide 33 carried by the central zbust section 25. The side' bust sections 24- and 26 have secured thereto clamping bolts 34 which are recei'ved'fin the slots of the slotted members 20. INith this construction it will be seen that by simplyv i loosening the clanniing bolt I() the central 5 bust section may be raised or lowered, and l because the members 31 are rigidly secured i the side bust sect ions 2l and 26 they will l also partake of' thismim'erment. lhis eenl struction makes the form much more elastief und capable ol a in uelgreater range ol" adjustment than lornls as new vommonly made. l The bottom of each waist section has secured -this plate so that= itcan be move side base pieces and overlap the central base piece. These overlapping slottedmembers are secured to the arms 36 by clamping bolts 38. If desired also t-he front and rear base pieces 35 mayhaveithe slotted clip 39 se-.
cured thereto which overlies and is secured to the members 37, as best seen'in Fig. 6.
AIn Fig. 7 I have shown a modified formof the invention wherein two slotted plates 88 f and` 89 are employed which cross-each other substantially at right angles, and areadjustably connected by other slotted vconnecting pieces 87, said connecting pieces being clamped to the slotted plates 88, 89 by clam ing bolts 86 and 85. The bolts Sti-are rigid y secured to the front and rear base pieces 35, while the bolts are secured to the two side; base pieces 35. The other two side v base pieces have secured thereto slotted me ers 83 which overlie both the late 89 and the connecting members 87 an which are secured to them by the bolts 85. In this construction the base of theform' may be enlarged or reduced in size by merely loosen? ing the bolts 85 or 86. I have also providedto the lgure.- As hereink own onebf the shoulder sections on each-side has extending' therefrom two headed studs 40,'and'the arm 41 carries the ring-like attaching member 42 which is provided With'two slots 43 that are ada ted to receive l the Shanks of' he'headed studh 40. The arm.is preferab hm ed to into ibo different positions, and to hold it in any adjusted position I have lshown a latch 44 hinged to the attaching member, as at 45, said latch having notches 46 one of which is adapted to engagea pin 47 carried by the arm.
The ferm is to be supported on a suitable standard 50 which may extend upwardly from any usual" base. 4This standard passes 'through the arms 36 and has extending from its upper .end a portion 51 of reduced diameter t iat 1s adapted to telescope within atubular member 52 secured to'and depending from the neck of the member. This tubular member 52 may be clamped to the spindle 51. by means oi a clamping bolt 53. When it is desired to lengthen the waist by separating the shoulde'l` portion from the waist portion,
the clamping bolt 53 will be loosened toper mit the shoulder portion to be elevated.
llaving deseril-ied my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 55 -theretofa base piece 35 and to bold the form 1 .Patent isz-f shoulder section to move in and out only,
