CAST-OFF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1909.
Application filed June 4, 1908. Serial No. 436,638.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES F. MoLLoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement: in Cast-Ofis; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1 a front view of a cast-off constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a rear view of the same. 7 Fig. 3 a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 a rear view of the upper portion of the front member, detached. Fig. 5 a view in rear elevation of the upper end of the rear member, detached. Fig. 6 a View in elevation of the spring detached. Fig. 7 a front View of a modiiied form of cast-off.
This invention relates to an improvement in cast-offs, and while particularly adapted for suspenders, is applicable for other puroses, such, for instance, as check reins for arnesses. In the usual construction of these devices a loop is em loyed to which the parts of a cast-off are inged, and it is desirable that one member shall have a tongue adapted to bear against a spring on the other part so that the members will be locked in their closed position; and in order to provide for this spring engagement and suitably support the members on the loop, they must be so wide as to be unsightly.
The object of this invention is to so form the members that one will ride over the other whereby they may be made comparatively narrow; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In illustrating my invention I have shown a cast-off particularly adaptedfor suspenders, and this description will be sufficient to enable others to adapt it for various purposes.
As shown, I employ a loop 2 referably formed from wire and having tl ie central ortion 3 of the lower bar 4 slightly offset. The upper end of the rear member 5 is rolled to form a sleeve 6 which surrounds the central portion of the lower bar 4; and secured to this member is a spring 7 the upper end 8 of which projects above the top of the sleeve. This spring may be secured to the rear member by forming the rear member with fingers 9 and the spring with notches 10 through which the fingers extend, the "fingers being turned down over the face of the spring as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The front member 11 is formed at its upper edge with ears 12 at opposite sides, and these cars are turned over the central portion 3 of the lower bar at opposite ends of the sleeve 6; while the central portion of the member 11 is formed with a rearwardly extending tongue 13 which is adapted to pass over and ride upon the sleeve 6 and to engage with the upper end of the spring 7. The lower end of the rear member may be formed with a curved hook 14, and the front member with a corresponding curved face 15 adapted to close the hook, and terminating in a thumb-piece 16, this frame being particularly adapted for round suspender ends, or its ears may be adapted to engage and support a runner 17, as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. The hook 1-4 will be open for the entrance or removal of the suspender end or other attachment, and the end of the tongue 13 engaging with the spring 7 looks this member in either its open or closed position, and by extending over the sleeve 6 provides suitable bearing for the front member without making the parts so wide as to provide for a direct bearing of the central part of the front member upon the lower bar 4.
1. A cast-off comprising a loop, a rear member formed with a centrally arranged sleeve surrounding one pair of said loop, a spring attached to the rear member and extending above said sleeve, combined with a front member formed on opposite sides with cars which surround the bar of the loop at opposite ends of the said sleeve, and with a centrally arranged tongue extending rearward over said sleeve and into engagement with the upper end of said spring, substantially as described.
2. A cast-off comprising a loop having its lower bar oifset, a rear member provided at its upper end with a sleeve surrounding the central portion of said lower bar, a spring attached to the rear member and extending above said sleeve, a front member formed on opposite sides of its upper edge with ears which are turned around the lower bar of the loop on opposite sides of said sleeve, said front In testimony whereof, I have signed this member formed at its upper end with a rearspecification in the presence of two subscribwardly extending tongue which extends over ing witnesses.
and bears upon said sleeve, said members JAMES F. MOLLOY. adapted at their lower ends to engage the device to which it is to be attached, substantially as described.
