Specification of Letters Patent.
Pate'ntedDec. 29, 1908.
Applicati on filed June 11, 1908. Serial No. 437,850.
To all whom 'it may concern: 7
Bart known that I, ERNEST h HUMPIIREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and are simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and efliciency in use.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a front view of my garter complete. Fig. 2 is an enlar ed front view of the connecting plate fontlie detachable'end of the garter. Fig. 3 is a front view .f the connecting frame with a permanently attached connecting plate for the opposite end.of thegarter. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the parts shown in Fig. 3 on the line to a: of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the connecting frame on the line y y of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a front view of the connecting plate for the detachable end of the garter, in a modified form.
A, designates an ordinary form of hose supporter or hose gripper, secured to the lower end of a pendent web B, the upper end of the said web being secured to the connecting frame 0 of the garter attachments. The garter D is permanently connected by one end to one end of the frame C by means of a connecting plate 7, while the other end of the garter has secured to it a detachable connecting plate or cast off 8, for attaching the said end to and detaching it from the connecting frame when putting on and taking off the garter. I
The connecting frame C is formed of a plate of sheet-metal cut and bent into the desired form by means of suitable dies. It is provided wit-h eyes 9 that extend longitudif nally near its oppositeedges at. its two longest sides, which eyes are for the attachment of the web B that so ports the'hose gripper A. T he connecting p ate 7 is of substantially a T shaped form with an eye 10 in its cross.
arm for attaching one end; of the garter D thereto. the T shaped connecting plate 7 is pivotally attached to the middle longitudinal line of thcconneeting frame near one end thereof, by means of an eyelet or tubular rivet 1]. that extends through suitable openings in the said two pahts, the ends of the tubular rivet The end of theucentral member of being turned over outwardlyto hold the said parts together while at the same time said parts are free to swivel or turn one upon the other. They are secured together with the connectingplate 7 swiveled on the front side of the frame C at or near one end thereof as shown. Near the opposite end of ihe frame C on the same middle line, a button stud 1 2 is secured with its head end on the front of the saidplate. f
' The detachable connecting plate Sis provided with eyes 13 f rhitaching it to one end ofthe garter D, while its central member is in the form of a loop having an opening 14, larger at one end and smaller at the other,-
.the junction of the said two ends being narrow enough to slightly pinch the body of the button'stud under its head. The larger end of the opening is of a size to let the head of the button stud pass through it, while the smaller end of the said opening is ofa size to prevent the head from passing therethrough, whereby the plate 8 is held on the button stud when the body of the said stud is received therein, as shown in Fig. 1, in the well known manner of fasteners of the loop and button type.
By my improvement the opposite ends of" the garter are swiveled or pivotally connectcd by means of connecting plates to the opposite ends of the connecting frame, while the middle vertical line of the hose supporter or gripper A is between these'two pivotal con nections. By having both ends of the garter pivoted or'swiv'eled on the frame at two different points at some distance froin eacll other, the garter yields readily to various strains so as to set comfortably :on th wearer. By the same construction the av... plates are entirely distinct and separate so as not to be confused with each other, and the wearer can readily observe which end of the garter is the-detachable one. The construction is simple and inexpensive and the article is ellicient in every way.
The ordinary yielding function of the-loop portion of the plate 8, for frictionally holding the loop against accidental detachment is accomplished in Figs. 1 and 2 by making the member are cut through into each other so the opposite end from that on which the first that the adjacent edge of the body of the plate on the two sides 15, of the loop member yield a little and provide for the elasticity of the loop member, even if it 13 made with more metal at the sides then shown in .big, 2.
I claim as my invention 1. A garter comprising a connecting frame, a hose gripper depending therefrom, a connecting plate for one end of the garter that is pi'votally mountedon the said connecting l I l l l l l l l frame near one end thereof, and a detachable eenneeting plate for the cast oil end of the arter the latter late havin a central n1e1n l; J 0
her in the form of a loop, and a button stud mounted on the said connecting frame near connecting plate is pivoted.
2. A garter comprising a connecting frame, a hose gripper depending therefrom, a connecting plate for one end of the garter, a tubular rivet pivotally connecting the said. plate by its central member to the front side of the said frame near one end thereof, a detachable connecting plate of the loop type for the cast off end of the said garter, and a button stud for the said detachable plate mount" ed on the opposite end of the said frame.
