Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 22, 1908. Serial No. 428,685.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM J. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Selma, in the county of Dallas, State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dentists Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and `use the same.
This invention has relation to tools for use by dentists in securing porcelain teeth to the backing in the construction of so-called bridge-work, or in repairing the same, as when a tooth is accidentally broken.
The invention consists of an adjustable duplex punch that is constructed and arranged to form two holes in the gold or platinum backing simultaneously for the reception of the securing pins.
The invention is fully and clearly shown as embodied in the deuice shown in the annexed drawing forming a part of this specification, in iiew of which the invention will be described in detail, in respect to its construction and mode of operation, and then be pointed out with distinctness and particularity in the subjoined claims.
Of the said drawings, Figure l is a front `view of the tool, Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Similar numerals designate similar parts or features in both views.
The tool shown as embodying the invention is somewhat similar to that of a pair of pliers, though the principal function is quite different therefrom. The implement shown comprises two handles 10 and 11 which are crossed toward their forward ends similar to a pair of pliers or the blades of scissors, and are pi'rotally connected at their crossed point l2, and diverge quite widely at their rear portions, the ends of thelatter beingdrawn toward each other by means of a spring 13. The forward ends of the handles are each provided with a rounded and pointed punch 14, that extends out at an angle to the end portion on which it is formed.
Between the punches and the pivotal point 12 of the handles is a set-screw 15, that is tapped through one of the punch-bearing parts and bears against the inner face of the other part, in order to adjust the distance that it is desired to have the punches separated, the spring between the opposite ends of the handles operating to preserve the adjustment.
In use, the punches 14 are placed in desired position on the gold or platinum backing and two holes are punched simultaneously in the metal, leaving the edges of the holes to be burnished well around the pins in the facing. With the `use of this tool it has been ascertained that better work can be done than where a punch is used that cuts out a small disk in providing the perforations for the pins; and that the risk of checking or fracturing the porcelain in soldering is greatly lessened.
What is claimed as the invention is l. A dentists tool for punching holes in the backing of crown or bridge-work facings, comprising a pair of pivoted handles having round and pointed punches formed on their forward ends, said punches extending at a right angle to said forward ends, and means for adjusting the distance apart of the punches and maintaining them in adjusted position.
2. A dentists tool for punching holes in the backing of crown or bridge-work facings, comprising a pair of pivoted handles having round and pointed punches formed on their forward ends, said punches extending at a right angle to said forward ends, aset-screw connected with and operating upon the forward portions of the handles to adjust the punches, and a compression spring operating on the rear ends of the handles to maintain the said adjustment.
