Description

Letters Patent No. 90,748, dated .Tune l, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FANS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all 'whom 'it may concern.-
Beit known that I, T. W. HAWKINS, of N ew Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement', in Fans; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the let-` ters of' reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent in Figure l, an edge view of the fan complete;
Figure 2, a side View and in .Figure 3, a transverse section of one part of the handle,
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of fans for which Letters Patent were granted to me, bearing date December 3l, 1867, the object being to make a stronger and better-shaped handle than as heretofore constructed; and
The invention consists in constrnctinglkthetwo ontsde part-s, which, combined, form the Ihandle, from thin sheet-metal, cut to the proper shape, and struck up so as to be concave-convex, the convex .being the outside, otherwise applied and adapted to the fan in like manner as the wood, which has heretofore been used.
To enable others skilled in `the art lto fullyunder stand my invention, I will proceed to describe the saine, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A are the several parts of which the fan proper is composed.
B B, the two outer parts, which, when the fan open, form the handle.
These parts B are cut from sheet-metal, so as te conform to the parts A, and struck into concavoconvex-forln, as seen in iig. 3, then applied and attached to the fan in the usual manner. This gives the han die an oval shape, more agreeable 'to the hand than the flat wood, as heretofore used, and itis much strenge!` and not liable to break or split, a great objection to this class of fans.
Having fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-
In a fan in which the two outer parts, ou the opening of the fan, form the handle, constructing the said outer parts from sheet-metal, struck into concavo-coa- Vex-form, substantially as set forth.
T. W'. HAWKINS.
