Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 14, 1908. Serial No. 121,146.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN G. I-Irnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Drums, in the county of Luzerne and btate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Clevises, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved draft connecting means embodying novel means for absorbing all shocks and jars and thereby relieving the strain upon the draft animals and reducii'ig the wear and tear upon the vehicle or implement to which the device is attached.
The object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple and durable in its construction and which can be readily applied to and adj usted to any desired position upon the draft beam.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, ref erence is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view showing the invention applied to a doubletree attached to the forward end of a plow beam. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the device. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 1-1 designate a pair of tubular casings which are disposed in a spaced and parallel relation to each other and are designed to fit upon opposite sides of the doubletree 2 or other draft member to which the device is applied. One end of each of the tubular casings 1 is open while the opposite end is closed at 3 and formed with a central opening through which a rod t extends. The two casings 1 are connected at a point adjacent their open ends by a clamping plate 5 which is rigidly connected thereto, the portion of the clamping plate between the easings being deflected outwardly as indicated at 5 to receive the edge of the doubletree. A cooperating clamping plate 6 is adjustably mounted upon the opposite ends of the tubular casings 1, and is provided with the rings 6 which are slidable upon the said casings. These two clamping plates are connected by the bolts 7 and the central portion of the movable clamping plate (3 is bowed or deflected outwardly at (5" similar to the clamping plate The doubletree 2 or illlilll. ogous draft member to which the attachment is applied is inserted between the tubular casings 1 and tightly clamped between the plates 5 and G by tightening the bolts 7.
It will be observed that the movable clamping plate 6 is formed in sections having a hinged connection at b, one of the hinged sections being released when the bolts 1'' upon one side of the device are loosened and being adapted to be swung outwardly to admit of the doubletree or draft member being inserted in position or removed therefrom without the necessity of loosening all of the bolts. The outer end of each of the rods 1 is provided with an eye t through which a. ring 9 is looped, the two rings 9 engaging a third ring 10 to which the swingletree or analogous member is applied. If found desirable a elevis of any suitable coustruction may be substituted for the rods 4- and rings cooperating therewith. It will thus be apparent that the draft is applied to the rods 4: and the invention contemplates the provision of cushioning means for cooperation with the said rods to relieve all sudden shocks and ars. A coil spring 11 is fitted within each of the tubular casings 1, one end of each of the coil springs abutting against the closed end of the tubular casing while the opposite end abuts against a washer member 12 carried by the bolt and held in position by a nut 13 threaded upon the bolt. In the present instance the washer members 12 have a cup-shaped formation and are received within the outer ends of the coil springs 11 so as to properly center the same within the tubular casings. It will also be obvious that by properly adjusting the nuts 13 the tension in the coil springs may be regulated and the device properly adjusted for use in connection with heavy and light loads.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the inner faces of the clamping plates 5 and 6 are roughened to enable them to securely grip the draft member to which the invention is applied, whether the same be formed of hard or soft material.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a pair of tubular casings arrangedin a spaced and substantially parallel relation, cooperating clamping members connecting the tubular casings, one of A the clamping members being rigid with the casings while the opposite clamping member is adjustably mounted thereon, connecting means between the clamping members, draft members, and cushioning means within the casings for cooperation with the draft members.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of tubular casings arranged in a spaced relation, a pair of 00- operating clamping plates connecting the tubular casings, the portions of .the two clamping plates between the casings being bowed outwardly in opposite directions, draft members, and cushioning means within the tubular casings for cooperation with the draft members.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of spaced .tubular casings, a pair of cooperating clamping plates connecting the tubular casings and having the portions thereof between the easings bowed outwardly in opposite directions, one of the clamping plates being formed in hinged sections, connecting means between the clamping plates, draft members, and
cushioning means within the tubular casings for cooperation with the draft members.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of tubular casings, a clamping member connecting the tubular casings, a cooperating clamping member formed in hinged sections and movably mounted upon the tubular casings, connecting means between the clamping members, draft members, and cushioning means within the tubular casings for cooperation with the draft members.
5. In a devlce of the character described,
the combination of tubular casings, a clamping plate connecting the tubular casings, a cooperating clamping plate formed in hinged sections slidably mounted upon .the tubular casings, connecting means between the clamping plates, draft rods passing loosely through the tubular casings, means for applying draft to the draft rods, and springs within the tubular casings cooperating with the draft rods.
