To all 207mm it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS I-I. SPARKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Apparatus for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
rlhis invention relates to new and useful improvements in springs for bodies of vehicles and the object in View is to produce a simple and efficient apparatus of this nature so arranged as to take up vibrations incident to the movements of the body in different directions.
My invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then' specifically `defined. in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which: v
Figure l is a side elevation of the'rear portion of the vehicle showing the application of my springs thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrow, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view` on line 3-3 of F ig. 2.
Reference now being had to the details Aof the drawings by letter, A designates the rear axle of the vehicle, mounted in a cylindrical shell A', thereto having clearly in F ig. 3 of the drawings, and which are apertured `for the reception of the bolts i v E designates the body of the vehicle mounted upon the frame E and to which latter the ends of the semi-elliptical springs E3 are connected by means of the links E2 and E4, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings. Said springs E3 pass underneath the axle A but are not connected therewith. Other springs, designated by letter H, of similar construction are fastened at their upper ends to the inner ends of the coiled springs I, the outer ends of the latter being connected.

`2 of the drawings and extend underneath the bolt Lvwhich passes through registering apertures in the plate L, which latter is apertured for the reception of a second bolt L2 which passes through eyes in a clamping plate L3 secured to the spring E3 by means of a nut L4. It will be noted that the spring E3 is supported by the two springs H and is free from attachment to the shell A about the axle.
By the provision of springs made in accordance with my invention, it will be noted that the body of the vehicle, mounted as shown and described, may have a yielding movement laterally as wellas rearwardly, the end springs being supported upon a side spring, thereby distributing the weight and tending to make the springs more sensitive to absorbing vibration.
lVhat I claim to be new is 1. A spring apparatus for vehicles comprising, in combination with the body and axle of a vehicle and frame upon which the body is mounted, a shell upon the axle, a hub plate secured to the shell, a spring secured at one end to the hub plate and a coiled spring connecting its other end with the body, a side spring secured at its ends to said frame and fastened to the spring which is connected to the hub plate and positioned underneath the axle.
2. A spring apparatus for vehicles comprising, in combination with the body and axle of a vehicle and frame upon which the body is mounted, a shell upon the axle, a hub plate secured to the shell and provided with ears, a side spring connecting its ends to the frame and passing underneath the axle, a spring secured at one end to said ears and a coiled spring connecting its other end with the body, and connections between the side spring and said spring which is connected to the hub plate.
3. A spring apparatus for vehicles comprising, in combination with the body and axle of a vehicle and frame upon which the body is mounted, a shell upon the axle, a hub plate secured to the shell and provided with ears, apertured lugs projecting from said plate in pairs upon either side of the shell, curved springs pivotally connected at their outer ends to said lugs, coiled springs connecting their other ends with the body of the vehicle, a side spring connected at its the shell, curved springs pivotally connected at their outer ends to said lugs, coiled Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, l
