JOSEF ROSCHYK, OF TARENTUM, PENNSYLVANIA.
PADLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application led December 6, 1907. Serial No. 405,447.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEF RoscHYx, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Tarentum, in the county of legheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing,
This invention relates to padlocks, and its object is, to provide a simple and effective lock which will be self-locking, but may be unlocked only by the use of a key of novel form.
The invention com rises a casing preferably formed of a sing e casting, and a bolt carrying a locking rod, and a spindle to which a plurality of fiaring springs are secured.
The invention also includes a key of peculiar form for compressing said springs, and hreby permitting the Withdrawal of the The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and its features of novelty will be set forth in the appended claim.V
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a view in perpective of a lock embodying the invention, iig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the lock casing, Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the bolt and its attachments, Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the lock, Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the same showing the key-hole, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view on an enlarged calle of the key employed for unlocking the The lock casing is formed with a chamber or compartment 1, and a longitudinal compartment 2, divided from the chamber 1 by a partition 3 in which is formed a circular opening 4, and a rectangular opening 5.
The elevated portion 6 of the casing is formed with a circular openin 7 and a circular socket 8, while the end 'wa 9 of the casing is formed with a rectangular key-hole 10 provided with a lug 11 on the wall thereof.
The numeral 12 designates a bolt conforming in shape to that of the compartment 1 within which it fits, and having an integral spindle 13, preferably square in cross seotion, to the inner end of which are secured by screws 14 curved s rings 15. The outer ends 16 of the springs are or project away from the spindle to engage the partition 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
Projecting from the bolt 12 is a locking rod 17 which extends through the openings 4 and 7 and into the socket 8, and also asses through a staple 18 or other device to e secured.
It will be apparent that the spindle 13 with its attached springs may be readily inserted into the casing through the opening 5, the springs being compressed as the spindle is inserted. As soon, however, as the free ends of the springs pass the partition 3, they expand to prevent the withdrawal of the bolt and spindle.
To unlock the bolt, I employ a key comprising a longitudinally-slotted body portion 19, and a bent end 2O formed with a square slot 22 communicating with the slot in the body 19 and with a recess 23 corresponding to the lug 11. The end 20 of the key is Jfirst inserted, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4, after which the key is turned to permit the spindle 13 to enter the slot 22. The key is then pushed in to compress the springs 15, after which the bolt may be withdrawn by its knob 24, such withdrawal releasing the sta le 18, as is obvious.
aving now described my invention what I claim as new, is
A padlock comprising a casing having an elevated portion at each end with the wal s of one of said elevated portions formed with an opening and a socket, said casing further having an o en and a closed end, said closed end provide with a transversely 'extending key slot having the up er wall thereoi1 formed with a depending ug, said casing furthermore provided with a vertical partition forming an end compartment and a longitudinally extending compartment, said end compartment being open, said partition formed with an opening and a rectangular slot, said opening 1n the partition being in alinement with the opening in said elevated portion, a bolt mounted in said end compartment and provided with a locking rod extending through said openings and engaging in said socket, said bolt furthermore provided with a spindle extending through the slot of the partition and provided with a pair of springs flaringout one end and having the fiared ends thereof engaging the partition to prevent the withdrawal'of the bolt through the slot in said partition, said springs adapted to be compressed by a key inserted through said In testimony whereof I afx my signature key slot Wherely sflmd spkrlldle can be vthin the presence of tWo witnesses. drawn throuvh t e s ot in t e arttiont ereby removingbthe locking rod 120m the openl JOSEF ROSCHYK' 5 ings in the socket and the bolt from said end f Witnesses:
