Specification of Letters Patent. v
Patented Dec. 8, 190-8 Application file'd June 4, 1908. Serial No. 436,739.
To all whom it ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, FRED A. BRoNoHAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at McDonald, in the county of Washington,
State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip- -tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to Wrenches, more particularly to the class known as quick action wrenches or those in which :the movable jaw may be adjusted lin one direction, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and' increase the eiticiencyvand utility of the implement.
Another object of the. invention is to providea simplyconstruoted wrench wherein the parts may be readily disconnected for the renewal or repairs of any parts which may be broken or impaired.
With these and other `objects in View the invention consists in a Wrench comprising a stock havinga stationary jaw-at oneend and with spaced ratchet teeth transversely in one of its faces, a movable jaw slidable over the stock and with. an internal recess andV a transverse aperture communicating with the recess, a pawl having ratchet teeth and movable bodily with the recess and provided with a stud extending therethrough and slid-ably engaging the aperture, said stud havingan elongated slot next tothe body of the pawl and with an aperture near the outer end, the aperture designed to receive a pull ring and the slot designed to support a spring operating tomaintain the pull yieldably in engagement with the teeth ot the stock.
The invention further consists incertain novel features of constructionas hereafter shown and described and specifically pointed out in'the claims, and 'in' the.drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation `ofthe improved wrench.- Fig. 2 is an edge one-half of the length 'of the stock andthe remainder of 'the stock comprises a portion of the hand grip, this portion having spaced i apertures 13-14 to receivel clampL bolts .1-5'-16 whereby hand grips 17--18 are secured to the side faces of the stock, the stock and the members 17`18 thus forming an effcient handle or grip to the wrench.
Slidably disposed over the toothed portion of the stock is a movable jaw 19 provided with an elongated internal recess 20 and with a transverse aperture 21 communiveating with the recess, the aperture located beneath the overhanging portion 22 of the movable jaw. Fitting in the recess 20 land movable bodily therein is a pawl23 having teeth 24 corresponding toand ada ted to en-.
f gage the teeth 12 of' the stock. T e pawl 23 is provided with a lateral stud 25, the latter provided with a slot 26 adjacent to the body of thepawl and with an aperture 27 near its outer end, thel aperture coming outside 'of the body of the aw 19 and adapted to receive a pullring 28. The rear face ofthe pawl 23 is also provided with small recesses 29-30 near its ends, and fitting'throughthe `slot 26 is a springl-with its ends bearing in the recesses 29-30. The spring thus eX- erts its force to maintain the teeth 24 of the pawl 23 yieldably in engagement with the teeth of the stock, While the pull ring 28 en' ablesthe operator 4to release the pawl when it is desired to adjust the movable jaw. l
. The teeth 12 of the stock and the teeth 24 of the pawl have one side inclined or oblique to the'longitudinal plane of the stock, so that the movable jaW may be adjusted toward the stationary jaw Without manipulating the jaw as the-teeth 24 simply cllck over the teeth 12 when the movable'jaw is adjusted in one direction but etl'ectually'hold it from movement 'in the opp'osite direction 'and when the movable jaw is to be adjusted away' from the stationary jaw, the pawl is released by pulling upon the ring 28 and holding the paw-l disconnected from` the stock during the adjustmentof the movable jaw,
and when the desired adjustment is reached the pawl ring is released when' the spring 31l will immediately connect the pawl to the stock. I
The means whereby the spring 31- is supported in position is an important feature of the invention and operates etlectually for the vpurpose required, and being so very sim- I ple will not be liable to get out of order or become disarranged. In event'o the breakage-of the spring a new one ma be readily supplied by detaching the'han grip mem and may also be manufactured in various sizes.
What is claimed, is
l. A wrench compri tioiiary jaw at one end hand grip members detachably engaging the opposite sides of the stock, an opposing jaw slidably engaging the stock and formed with an internal cavity and with a transverse aperture comanniicating with the cavity, a pawl movable bodily within said cavity and with teeth in one edge engaging the teeth of. the stock, said pawl having a stud rojecting through said aperture and forme with a transverse slot next to the body of the lpawl and an sing a stock having. spaced teeth in one face and with a staaperture exteriorly of the jaw, a spring bearing through said slot and a ainst the bottom surface of the recess an with its terminals engagin the pawl, and means operatin upon said stud to Withdraw said pawl rom engagement with the stock.
2. A, wrench comprising a stock haviiig spaced teethV in one face andwith a stationary jaw at one end, e slidably engagingthe stock nd forme with an internal cavity and with a transverse aperture communicating with the cavity, a pawl engaging said cavity and movable bodily therein and with teeth at one edge corresponding to the teeth of the stock and adapted to engage the same, said awl-having a studprojecting through sai aperture and provided with a transverse slot next the body of the p'awl and an aperture exteriorly of the jaw, a spring operating through said slot and bearing between the pawl and the body of the movable jaw, and a pull ring detachably engaging said stud externally of the movable jaw.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
FRED ADRIEN BRONCHAIN.
