ROLLY W. JACKSON, OF NEWMAN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO vGEORGE -W. JACKSON, OF NEWMAN, ILLINOIS.
WRENCH.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed July 31,1905. Serial No. 272,027.
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, HOLLY W. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newman, in the county of Douglas and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specilicatiomand to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a wrench that may be adapted to several uses, such as removing the bolts from nuts or as a pipe-wrench and for other purposes to which a wrench may be founduseful, and one in which both strength and durability are obtained, as well as effectiveness in operation and simplicity in construction; and it consists in a wrench constructed substantially asv shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a wrench constructed in accordance with myinvention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section thereof, showing the jaws and the handle in elevation; Fig. 3, a transverse section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the stock or body of the wrench, to which is pivoted the handle B of any preferred construction, the pivotal connection being indicated at a, which pivot extends through a bifurcated head C, and a removable pivot connects the bifurcated head to the shank c of the movable jaw D.
The shank c extends through a sleeve E, which forms a guide therefor, said sleeve being integral with the stock or body A of the wrench, and the inner ends of the side walls of the sleeve form stops d, against which abut the edges of the wings e of the bifurcated head C to limit the movement of the handle of the wrench.
The movable and pivoted jaw F has two points or shouldersf g, which are adapted to engage with the inclined teeth L on the body of the stock or body A of the wrench. The
point or projection g engages the teeth upon the stock or body of the wrench to hold the jaw stationary when the wrench is in use, and the point or projection f prevents the jaw from tilting forward to any greater extent than is necessary to disengage the point or projection g with the teeth when it is desired to slide the yoke j', carrying the jaw, along the sleeve E.
The jaw F is pivoted ata' to a yoke j, which embraces the stock or body of the wrench and also the sleeve thereof and is adapted to slide thereon to increase or diminish the distance between the jaws, as required.
Longitudinal guide-shoulders /t upon the sides of the body A of the wrench are provided for the yoke j', the ends of the yoke eX- tending inwardly to form a bearing Z upon the shoulders, said shoulders forming guidetracks for the yoke and enabling it to slide more readily without binding.
The guide shoulders or tracks may be .formed at the juncture of the stock or body of the wrench with the sleeve thereof or constructed in any well-known manner found best adapted to the purpose, and the faces of the jaws of the wrench may be serrated or constructed with the teeth, as found desirable.
lt will be noticed that a perfect action of the pivoted and sliding jaw F is provided in the employment of the two points or projections f g, which act to control the movement of the jawA by engaging the teeth t on the stock or body A, while the pivoted handle B controls the movement of the jaw D, no spring or other like attachments being employed that would tend to complicate the wrench and become easily out of order.
Having now fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wrench comprising a toothed body portion, a guide-sleeve integral with said body portion, the longitudinal edges of the side walls of said sleeve forming guides and the rear ends thereof forming stops, a jaw having a shank extending through the guide-sleeve, a handle having a bifurcated head pivoted to the body portion of the wrench and to the shank and adapted to abut against the stops formed by the rear ends of the side Walls of the guide-sleeve, and a yoke embracing the guide-sleeve and slidable thereon, the ends of said yoke extending inwardly to bear against the longitudinal edges of the side walls of the guide-sleeve, and a suitable jaw pivoted to the Slidable yoke, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 1o
In testimony whereoil I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
