To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES C. HOLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Dodge and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to unprovements in wrenches, and resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specificatwn and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings there is illustrated a satisfactory reduction of the improvement to practice, but the. important instrumentalities thereof may be varied and so it is to be understood that 1am not to be limited to the precise detail construction therein illustrated, but I am entitled to all such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a detail central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line H of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the movable jaw, Fig. 6 is a similar view of the tooth carrying block, Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view on the line 7-7 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 8 is a plan of a modified form of the wrench.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the wrench is designated generally by the numeral 1, the same including a head 2 which is provided with a stationary jaw 3 and which has also arranged thereon a movable jaw 4:, while the numeral 5 designates the lever which is pivotally connected with the head 2, as at 6.
The head 2,. in plan, is substantially D-shaped, and it is upon one of the arms of the said head that the jaw 3 is formed. The rear and rounded portion of the head is centrally slotted or bifurcated, as at 7, and the lever 5 is positioned within the said bifurcation centrally of the said rear portion of the head, the pivot 6 passing through the upper and lower walls provided by the said bifurcation and, of course, through the lever 5. The bifurcated portion 7 extends through the side arms of the head, so that the lever 5 may be swung upon its pivot 6 to a considerable degree. The connecting or transverse member 8 of the substantially D-shaped head 2 is also bifurcated from one of the ends of the said head to the arm extension forming the jaw 3, as indicated by the numeral 9, and the jaw 4 includes a longitudinally extending arm which is arranged parallel with the jaw 3 and which has its end provided with a reduced right angular arm or shank 1.0 which is received within the slot or bifurcated portion 9 of the element -8 of the head 2. The shank 10 is thus reduced and provides the jaw 4, at the juncture of the shank with the jaw, with laterally extending portions forming shoulders 11 which abut with the outer face of the member 8. The side of the head 2 provided with the jaw 3 is formed with a slot or opening 12 through which the shank 10 may be projected when the jaw d is moved toward the jaw 3 to clamp an element between the said jaws, and in a manner which will presently be set forth. The rear face or end of the shank 10 is curved or arcuate, the same being struck on an arc concentric to the pivot 6, and the said arched portion 13 is notched to provide the same with teeth 14. One or both of the faces of the shank 10 is formed with a longitudinally extending tongue 15 which is arranged within a suitable groove 16 formed in one or both of the arms provided by the member 8, the said groove or grooves terminating a suitable distance from the end of the head opposite that provided with the jaw 3, and the said terminal wall or walls serve as abutment members or stops which contact with the end or ends of the tongue or tongues 15 to limit the movement of the shank and jaw 4 in an outward direction with relation to the jaw 3.
The lever 5 forward of its pivot has its end, which is arranged within the D-shaped opening of the head 2, reduced and round in cross section, as indicated by the numeral 17, the same being received within a round opening provided in a block 18. The block is slidably mounted on the portion 17 of the lever 5, and is provided upon what I will term its inner face with a tooth 19 which is adapted to engage between two of the teeth 14.- of the arched toothed or rack face 13 of the shank 10. Arranged longitudinally of the lever 5 and passing through suitable guide eyes therein, is a rod 20, the same being passed through the bifurcated portion 7 of the head 2 and having one of its ends loosely connected with the block 18. The opposite end of the rod 20 is loosely connected with a grip or handle 21 which is pivotally secured to the lever 5, and which is influenced, in a direction outward of the said lever by a spring 22. The spring is of sufficient strength to force the rod 20 against the block 18 to sustain the tooth 19 thereof into engagement between the teeth 14 of the shank 10.
In operating the wrench the grip or handle 21 is moved toward the lever 5,
throwing the block 18 toward the pivot 6 of the said lever, and bringing the tooth 19 out ofengagementbetween the teeth 14 of the shank 10. When the device is held in such position the jaw 4 may be moved toward the jaw 3 manually to obtain what may be termed a rough adjustment of the jaws of the wrench upon the article to be operated upon. After such adjustment is obtained the grip or handle 21 is released permittingthe block to slide upon the portion 17 of the lever to bring the tooth 19 again into'engagement between the teeth of the shank 10, when a swinging movement of the lever upon its pivot 6 will move the jaw t toward the jaw 3 so that an article will be tightly gripped between the jaws.
In Fig. 8 there is shown a slightly modified form of the wrench. In this figure the stationary jaw and the head thereof are substantially similar to that heretofore described, and the movable jaw l has its shank arranged between the bifurcated arms of the connecting member 8 of the substantially V-shaped head 2 of the stationary jaw 1. The rear face of the shank of the movable jaw is parallel with the inner face or edge thereof, and is provided with a line of straight teeth 14, which are adapted to be engaged by the teeth provided upon the slidable dog 50. This dog 50 is mounted for slidable movement upon the inner end of the lever 51, and the portion thereof disposed between the arms of the V-shaped head forward of the pivot 52 which connects the lever with the head 2. The numeral 55indicates an operating rod for the dog 50. This rod has one of its ends curved and is pivotally secured to the dogs,
as at 56, the opposite end of said rod being connected with the spring pressed operating handle similar to the handle 21 of the device previously described, and the operation of the parts is substantially similar to that of the device previously described.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention,what I claim is:
1. A wrench including a head having a side extension forming a stationary jaw, said head having its outer face bifurcated, a movable jaw having a reduced shank arranged within the bifurcated portion of the head, one of the walls of the said bifurcation having a slot which terminates adjacent one of the ends of the heads, a tongue upon the shank arranged within the slots, a lever pivotally connected with the head, and means comprising mechanism arranged upon the lever for cooperating with the shank of the movable jaw for sliding the said jaw toward or away from the stationary jaw.
2. A wrench including a stationary D-- shaped head having an arm extension forming a stationary jaw, the outer connecting member of the head being bifurcated and the side formed with the jaw having an opening communicating with the said bifurcation, one of the walls provided by the bifurcation being grooved from the said opening to a point adjacent the opposite side of the head, a movable jaw including a reduced angular shank which is received within the bifurcated portion of the head, the said shank having a tongue which engages thegroove in the said bifurcated portion of the head, the rear face of the shank being arched inwardly and provided with teeth, a pivoted lever upon the head, a slidable block upon the lever, a tooth upon the slidable block and adapted to engage between two of the, teeth of the shank, and means arranged upon the lever for operating the block to move the tooth of the same into or out of engagement with the teeth of the shank.
