T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'GEORGE H. SMYTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Trestle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mechanics trestles, more particularly to a clamping device for use in connection therewith, for providing for the vertical adjustment of the trestle beam at any desired elevation or height.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ready means whereby the ordinary trestle may be supplied with leg extensions for effecting the aforesaid purpose; also, to provide a simple device of the minimum number of part-s for effecting said result.
Additional objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter in the accompanying description and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Said invention consists of certain features or instrumentalities which will be embraced and noted in the claim after having been fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the trestle with parts removed. Fig. 2 represents a broken end elevation thereof.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the embodiment of my invention, I provide an ordinary trestle 1, the legs 2 of which are preferably connected or braced together at their lower ends, each by a transverse base member or bar 3.
To the outer sides of each of said legs is suitably secured guide members t arranged one near the lower end of the leg and the other about mid way between the lower end of said leg and the trestle beam.
A clamping contrivance 6, comprises pref-- erably two pairs of plate members 7 8 and an intermediate or turn buckle like member 9 for application to the leg members of said trestle. Each pair of said plate members is connected together by parallel screw bolts 10 passing through said plate members and holes 11 through the trestle leg members, said bolts being suitably equipped with nuts 12 upon their outer ends bearing against the outer plate members. Said turn buckle member has lateral extensions 13, 14, provided with right and left handed screw threads, respectively, engaging the corresponding screw threads in the inner plate members 9, and whereby by manipulating said turn buckle member the individual members of said clamps will be moved nearer together or farther apart, as circumstances may require, as will hereinafter appear.
The leg extensions 15 are suitably applied to the trestle leg members upon their outer sides and guided by means of the members 4c previously referred to, and between the plate members of the aforesaid clamps. It will, therefore, be seen that by loosening or tightening, or turning the turn buckle member in either of two directions, said leg exten sions 15 may be vertically adjusted, whereby the trestle beam may be raised and lowered to the desired height or elevation as convenience or expediency may require.
It will be noted that this device is exceedingly simple comprising the minimum number of parts, is readily adapted for application to an ordinary mechanics trestle, and may be cheaply manufactured.
It will be understood that various changes in the construction and arrangement of the details of the'parts maynbe readily made and yet the invention still remain intact and fully within the spirit of my invention.
A trestle comprising a beam with cuneate standards attached thereto, guides located upon the outer sides of the standards, legs located in said guides, clamps passing transversely through the sides of the standards and surrounding the legs, and means for drawing the clamps toward each other whereby the legs may be bowed between the guides and against the sides of the standards.
