JACK-SCREW HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Dec. 29, 1908.
Application filed October 26, 1908. Serial No. 459,582.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I HERBERT D. CRYSTAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at eed, in the county of Siskiyou and State of California, have invented a new and useful J ack-Screw Head, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a device used for the purpose of centering shafting when the journal boxes thereof are to be babbitted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which may be applied to any jack screw head to make it applicable for the purpose of babbitting the boxes of shafting.
In almost every industrial establishment there are a number of jack screws, but a jack screw alone is not suflicient to center a line of shafting when the boxes are in need of repair, and to provide a machine for the purpose of centering the shafting would be too expensive, but with this invention a small extra head is secured to the jack screw head and at once makes possible to perfect adjustment of the shafting.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device, Fig. 2 is a side View of the same, and Fig. 3 is an end view showing the device attached to a screw head.
The jack screw is numbered 1, the head thereof being of any common form, since this adjusting device is adapted to be secured to any jack screw. The device is formed with the base plate 2 which has the upstanding ears 3 at each end thereof and the depending ears 4 under the ears 3 Each of the ears is provided with a set screw, the lower pair having curved clamps 5 secured on the ends of the set screws to provide means to attach the adjusting device to the head of any jack screw. The plate 2 is provided with a groove which runs from the ear 3 at one end to the ear 3 at the other end thereof, and in this groove travels a block 6 having a V for the shaft to rest in. This block 6 is held in place by means of the plates 7 and 8 which are secured to the base plate 2 by means of the bolts 9, said plates taking in a groove in the side of the slidable block 6.
The operation of the device is as follows: The base plate is secured to the jack screw to be used by setting up the screws in the ears 4 till the clamps hold the jack screw head tightly, the jack screw is then placed under the shaft and the same is lifted to the proper height by operating the jack screw. Since the shaft never has to be moved any very considerable amount to center it in the journal boX, the horizontal adjustment can be made without moving the jack at the base, the screws in the ears 3 affording all the motion necessary. It will thus be seen that any jack can be easily and quickly equipped with means whereby a shaft may be moved in two planes.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In a jack screw head, a base plate, means below the base plate to secure the same to a jack screw head, means carried by the base plate to support a shaft, and means to move the shaft support transversely of the head.
9.. In a jack screw head, a base plate having a pair of depending ears and a pair of upstanding ears, means carried by the lower set of ears to secure the plate to a jack screw head, means carried by the plate to support a shaft and means to move the shaft transversely of the jack screw head.
3. In a jack screw head, a base plate having a pair of depending ears and a pair of upstanding ears, set screws passing through the depending ears and having clamps on the ends thereof, a slidable block on the plate and adapted to support a shaft, and means passing through the upstanding ears to move the shaft support transversely of the ack screw head.
4. In a jack screw head, a base plate having a pair of depending ears and a pair of upstanding ears, set screws passing through the depending ears and having clamps on the ends thereof, a block having a V-shaped cut in the top thereof and slidable on the plate, and a set screw passing through each upstanding ear to move the slidable block across the top of the head.
In testimony whereof I have set my hand this 18th day of October A. D. 1908, in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
HERBERT D. CRYSTAL.
