CARL E. TAYLOR, OF WOODSVILLE, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
BRIDLE-BIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application filed March 5, 1908. Serial No. 419,368.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL E. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodsville, in the county of Grafton and State of New Ham shire, have invented a new and useful Bri le-Bit, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bridle bits.
The object of the invention is to provide a bit which shall be adapted for use in connection with any character of bridle and in the employment of which certain control of an animal may be secured without causing unnecessary pain, and further, to prevent injury to the animals mouth at the point of connection of the bit-bar with the bit-rings.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a bridle bit as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a bridle-bit constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail view showing more particularly, the manner in which the slide straps are connected with the crown strap of the bridle.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the bit-bar which is herein shown as an ordinary straight one, although it may be of any other preferred type. At each end of the bar is arranged an eye 2 by which connection is effected with the bit-rings 3. These rings are skeleton structures and each is provided with a loop 4 with which the check strap (not shown) is connected and with a loop 5 around the lower wall of which the eye 2 is engaged. In order to protect the horses mouth from injury at the point of connection of the eye 2 with the loops 5, shoulders 6 are provided, one on each side of each eye, and these will operate positivelyy to prevent the flesh at the corners of an animals mouth from catching in the bit-rings.
Projecting from each of the bit-rings is a rectangular guard 7 which is preferably integral with the ring and is of sufficient size to permit the slide-strap freely to work therein. Within the upper end of each of the guards is mounted a grooved roll 8 which is arranged upon the stud or in 9 that passes through the guard 7 and t e center bar l0 of the ring. The object for providing the guard is to prevent any accidental separation of the slide-strap from the bit-ring should the pin or bearing of the roller break, it being seen that under such condition the upper wall 1l of the guard will catch the strap and thus prevent an accident.
Each slide strap, to which reference has been made, is preferably circular in cross section and carries at one end a ring 12 to connect with the rein and at the other end a double hook 13 that is adapted to engage orifices 14 formed in the two members or in the fork of the crown strap 15, the object of employing the double hooks being to insure a strong and positive connection between the slide-strap and the crown-strap.
By the employment of the bit shown, it will be seen that when draft is applied to the reins that there will be a direct pull upon the bit which will be in the direction best adapted to control the animal without inflicting 4 pain, but owing to the manner in which the bit is connected with the crown-strap, it will be seen that upon heavy draft being applied to the reins that the bit will be lifted in the horses mouth and thereby exert such leverage as will be thoroughly effective in subduing a fractious horse.
The improvements herein defined are simple in character and will be found thoroughly effective and useful for the purposes designed.
l claim The combination with a bit, of bit-rings secured thereto and provided with shoulders arranged on each side of the terminals of the bit, rectangular guards secured to the outer sides of the rings, rollers journaled within the guards, and slide straps engaging the rollers each of which carries at one end a rein-engaging ring and at its other end a double hook adapted to engage orifices in the fork of a crown strap.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CARL E. TAYLOR.
