IMPROVEMENT IN HALTER-CHAINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,408, dated January 14, 1879; application filed December 3, 1878.

My invention relates to an improved halter-chain or hitching-guard for horses, the object being to provide an attachment adapted to be snapped or otherwise fastened to any ordinary hitching-post, shed, tree, or other fixed object, the said device constructed in such a manner that the horse may be firmly secured by the same, and while sufficient freedom and movement of the horses head is allowed, he will be prevented from gnawing or rubbing his head against the object to which he may be secured.
My invention consists in the novel construction of a hitching-chain, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 represents my improved hitchingchain in use. Fig. 2 represents a detached view of my improved safety-hook, showing the ball-and-socket joint in section; and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the link.
A is my improved safety-hook, the point a of which is curved inward to prevent it catching on anything it may come in contact with. a is an internal projection, whose inner line is on a line with the inner line of the main part of the hook, thus tending to keep the ring of the bridle or halter in the hook that may be placed therein until passed over the projection a by the hand and out through passage a?. This hook is also provided with a ball-and-socket joint, to, which prevents the chain to which it is attached becoming twisted. The part having the ball thereon is provided at its other end with an eye, a by means of which it is connected with the chain.
B is a link formed of two loops, marked, respectively,b and b united and forming an external appearance of a figure 8. The loop I) is entirely closed, forming a ring usually oblong in shape, and cannotbe opened without breakage, while loop remains in the position shown in Fig. 3 until it is passed through another link, when it, being malleable, is forced down by a hammer into the position shown in the chain. (See Fig. 1.)
It is obvious that should a link become broken by any means, another of this kind could be replaced by any one without the aid of a blacksmith, as is usual in other cases.
A single link of this or other suitable con struction connects the safety-hook A, referred to, with abar-link, 0, having eyes at eitherend. This bar is about seven inches long, and connects, by means of its eye, with a like barlink, D, about sixteen inches long, having also eyes at either end.
To the end of bar D are three or four links of any suit-able construction, that described being preferred, and to these links is secured the snap-hook E, of ordinary construction, which, in turn, is snapped into a ring or other suitable devlce in a hitching-post or other object in hitching the horse to the same.
It is obvious that this construction of a hitching-chain, by means of its bar D, will prevent the horse from gnawing the post or other object to which he may be hitched, as he cannot get to the same; yet at the same time he may rub his head against the long bar of the chain in protecting himself from the flies-advantages not claimed for other devices used for hitching horses.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hitching-chain composed of a section of loosely-connected links and another section of bars, 0 1), said chain provided at each end with suitable hooks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a hitching chain, the combination of the bar D, bar 0, link B, and hooks A and E, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a hitching-chain, the hook A, composed of parts a, a a a, and a substantially as and for the purpose set forth,
