UNITED s ArEs PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. PATTERSON, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH N. JEROME, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. PATTER- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vandeburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Vrenches; and I do declare the following tube a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe wrenches.
The object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character, the jaws of which may be adjusted by manipulating the handle to cause the same to engage pipes of various sizes, and to firmly grip thelatter when pressure is applied to the handle.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a rear edge view; Fig. 3 is a side view partly in section; Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a detail side view of the upper end of the wrench showing a modified form of the outer jaw member.
Referring more particularly tothe drawings, 1 denotes the handle of the wrench, the outer end of which; is providedwith apertured lugs, 2, between which is pivoted the inner end of the inner aw member, 3. The inner end of the jaw member 3 is reduced to fit between the lugs, 2, of the handle and to form shoulders, 4, which are curved or segmental in shape to conform to the curved outer end of the lugs, 2, as shown. On the outer end of the lugs, 2, adjacent to the forward edge of the wrench are projections, 5, which form stops, and are adapted to be engaged with notches, 6, formed in the adjacent portion of the shoulders, 4:, thereby limiting the movement of the jaw member 3 in this direction. The outer end of the inner jaw member 3 is provided with an enlarged jaw, 7, the outer face of which is notched or provided with serrations, 8. Pivotally mounted on the jaw member 3 below the jaw 7 is a bail-shaped guide, 9, having a squared upper portion to engage the square shoulder formed by the inner end of the jaw, 7.
Slidably mounted in the bailshaped guide, 9, is an outer jaw member comprising a shank, 10, on the outer end of which is pivoted an outer hook-shaped jaw, 12, the inner face of which is serrated to co-act with the serrated face of the inner jaw, 7. The shank, 10, is slidingly engaged with the guide, 9, and in one side of the shank, 10, is formed a longitudinally disposed groove, 13, with which is engaged a stop pin, 14, arranged in one side of the guide as shown, to
limit the outward movement of the shank,
10, and jaw, 12. j The rear edge of the shank, lO, is provided with a series of ratchet teeth, 15, while the inner edge of the shank, adjacent to "its lower end is beveled out;- wardly as shown at 16,
Pivotally engaged with jacent to its outer end is a bail-shaped locking pawl, 17, the outerend of which is provided with a rack-engaging edge, 18, which the handle 1, ad y is adapted to be engaged with the ratchet v 1 teeth, 15, on therear edge of the shank, 10. Formed integralwith the inner pivoted ends of the pawl 17 is a bail-shaped thumb piece, 19, between which and the adjacent edge of the handleis arranged a coiled spring, 20, v
the tension of which is normally exerted to. hold the edge, 18, of the pawl in engagement with the ratchet teeth of the shank,10. By depressing thethumb piece, 19, the pawl, 17
is lifted; todfisengage the edge 18 from-the ratchetfiteeth Jon the shank, thereby permittingsaid shank and the outer jaw to be moved outwardly for engagement with the pipe or other object to be turned.
In using the wrench, when it is desired to engage the same with a pipe, the thumb piece, 19, is depressed to disengage the pawl from the ratchet teeth on the shank of the outer jaw, after which the hooked end of the outer jaw is engaged with the object to be turned and the aw pulled out to a sufiicient extent to admit the pipe or object between the serrated faces of the inner and outer jaws, after which the pawl is released and is engaged with the ratchet teeth of the outer jaw shank by the spring 20, thus holding the outer jaw against further outward movement. The handle, 1, is now manipulated in the proper direction for turning the pipe, which will also cause the pawl, 17, to
draw the outer jaw shank inwardly and the outer jaw into tight engagement wit-h the pipe, thus preventing the jaws from slipping around the pipe and causing the jaws to grip the latter with sufficient force to enable the same to be turned. To disengage the wrench from the pipe or object, it is simply necessary to depress the thumb piece, 19, and release the pawl from engagement with the ratchet teeth on the shank of the outer jaw, when the latter may be readily pulled out by drawing inwardly on the handle, thus disengaging the wrench from the pipe without the necessity of touching any other part of the wrench or for using more than one hand.
InFig. 5 of the drawings is shown a modified form of the outer aw member, wherein the outer jaw, 12, and its shank, 10, are formed in one piece.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood, without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims. 7'
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a pipe wrench, a handle, an inner jaw member pivotally connected to the outer end of said handle, a guide pivotally connected to said member, an outer jaw shank slidably mounted in said guide, said shank havinga longitudinal groove, an outer jaw pivotally connected to the outer end of said shank, a stop pin in said guide to engage the groove in said shank to limit the outward movement thereof, a spring projected pawl having a pivotal connection with said handle,
and adapted to engage the ratchet teeth on said outer jaw shank, and a thumb piece whereby. said pawl is disengaged from said ratchet teeth, substantially as described.
2. In a pipe wrench, a handle, an inner jaw member pivotally connected to the outer end of said handle, an outer jaw member having a shank, a guide on said inner jaw member adapted to engage said shank and to hold said outer jaw in slidable engagement with said inner jaw, a series of ratchet teeth formed on the shank of said outer jaw, a bail-shaped locking pawl pivotally mount ed on the outer end of said handle, a rackengaging edge formed on the outer cross piece or looped end of said bail-shaped pawl to engage the teeth on said outer jaw shank, a right-angularly formed bail-shaped thumb piece on the inner end of said pawl, and a spring between the outer loop of said bailshaped thumb piece and the adjacent side of said handle whereby said pawl is held in operative engagement with the ratchet teeth on said outer jaw shank.
3. In a pipe wrench, a handle, an inner jaw member pivotally connected to the outer end of said handle, a guide pivotally c011- nected to the inner jaw member, an outer jaw shank slidably mounted in said guide, an outer aw pivotally connected to said shank, a series of ratchet teeth on said shank, a locking pawl, said pawl comprising a bail pivotally connected to said handle, a toothengaging edge in said bail adapted to be engaged with the teeth on the outer jaw shank, a bail-shaped thumb piece on said bail, and a spring to normally hold said tooth-engaging edge in operative engagement with the teeth on said shank.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM IV. PATTERSON.
