Description

UNITED sTATEs PALTENT oEEioE.
' JOSEPH H. HIRST, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN BERG,
OF TORONTO, CANADA.
ENvELoP AND WEAPPER.
No. 905,313. i
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1908.
Application filed February 9, 1907. serial No. 356,626.
To all whom t may' concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HEERLE- THWAITE I-IrRsT, of the city of Toronto, in the county ot York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops and llfrappers; and I hereby declare t-hat the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip-v tion ot' the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in envelops and wrappers, such as are used to contain letters and documentary matter, and the object of the invention is to make the closure and sealing parts of the wrappers or envelops so that when closed and sealed they cannot be reopened wit-hout indicating that tact. In carrying out this object the body part of each Wrapper or envelop is formedl with the usual opening, and flap. In the body part adjacent to the said opening is a slit to receive the flap or the sealing tab constituting a part thereof and in the body part and flap are other slits to receive a supplemental seal.4
The iap, tab, and supplemental seal are so gummed as to be practically impervious to the action of steam or other unsealing agents, unless sufficiently acted on thereby to saturate the material of which. the wrapper or envelop is made, and are preferably perforated at the boundary of the gummed part to render the gummed part easily tearable.
.For an understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings in which Figures 1 and 2 represent an envelop according to my invention. Fig. 3 shows a modified :torm of the same. Fig. 4t illustrates the method of gumming the seal.
Like characters of reference indicate like .parts throughout the specilication.
The gum on the Hap 2 and tab 4- is damped and the tab inserted in the slit 8 and the wholev pressed for a short time. lVhen the gum has hardened it is practically impossible to re-open the envelop Without indicating that fact. Other slits 5 and 6 are provided in the envelop and gummed Hap respectively, and through them pass the tabs 7 of a supplemental seal 8. These talos are gummed in the same manner as the tab t and are damped and inserted after the tlap 2 has been fastened down. The seal 8 has side extensions 9 gummed on the opposite side to the gumming of the tabs 7. This gumming may be conveniently effected by lbending the tabs back upon the body portion of the seal (see Fig. 4) and passing a gum spreader over the whole. The gumming of the tab L may likewise be eiected by bending the tab back upon the flap 2 and passing a gum spreader over the Whole. As an additional safeguard the tabs may be perforated at the boundary a of the gummed parts. (See Fig. 3.)
It is to be understood that, although the invention has been described particularly as applied to envelops, it can be used in connection with any other form of wrapper constructed ot paper, linen or the like in which the flap is to be integral with the body of the wrapper.
that I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A wrapper comprising a body part having' a slit therein and a gummed flap having a slit therein, in combination with a seal having a gummed tab capable ot passing through the slit in the body part, a second gummed tab capable of passing through the slit in the 'flap and lateral extensions gummed on the side opposite to the gumming of the tabs and capable of being attached to the outer surface of the wrapper.
2. A wrapper comprising a body part having a slit therein and a gummed tlap having a slit therein, in combination with a seal having a transversely perforated gummed tab capable of passing through the slit in the body part, a second gummed tab Vcapable of passing through the slit in the liap, and-lateral. extensions gummed on the sides opposite to the gumming of the tabs.
3. A wrapper comprising a body part having two parallel slits therein, a gummed iap having a slit'therein, on said body part,
a gummed tab attached to said flap and capable of passing through one of the slits in the body part, in combination With a seal having a gumnied tab Capable of passing through the other slit in the body part, a second gunnned tab capable of passing through the slit in the flap, and lateral eX- tensions guinnied on the opposite sides to the gumining of the tabs and capable of being attached to the outer surface of the Wrapper.
4. A Wrapper comprising a body part having two parallel slits therein, a guinined flap, having a slit therein, on said body part, a transversely perforated gumrned tab attaohed to said l'lap and capable olf passing through one of the slits in the body part, in combination with a seal having a rausversely perforated gunuued lab capable oi' passing through tho other slit in tin` body part, a second transversely perforated guinined tab capable of passing through the slit in the fla-p, and lateral extensions gunnned on the side opposite to the gumining of the tabs.
Toronto, February 2nd, 1907.
