ABRAHAM GOLDBARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STREET-NUMBER INDICATOR FOR HOUSES.
Patented Nov. 24, 1908.
Application filed April 8, 1908. Serial No. 425,830.
T 0 all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, [\BRAHAM GoLonxin), a subject of the Czar of Russia, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street- Number Indicators for Houses, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to street munber indicators for houses, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted to be secured to or connected with the front wall of a house adjacent to a door or over a door, or at any other desired point and which consists of a box or case of novel construction and adapt ed to be illuminated either by means of a gas or oil burner.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of my improved street number indicator, and showing the same connected with the wall of a house; Fig. 2 a back view of the indicator detached, and ;Fig. 3 a section of the indicator on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have indicated at a the wall of a house on one side or top of a door frame, and in the practice of my invention I provide a box or case b of suitable dimensions and comprising two opposite sides I) and b, a back 6*, a front 6 a bottom I) and a top 7f provided with the usual ventilating hood 5 The back 5 of the box or case is much wider transversely than the front 6", and the sides b and converge forwardly, and the bottom 5 is provided with perforations Z) designed to admit air to supply combustion. The bottom I) of the box or case Z2 is provided with a large central opening 0, at one side of which and within the box or case is hinged as shown at c a lamp support 0 preferably provided adjacent to the hinge 0 with an upwardly ranging finger piece 0 by which it may be raised when the door is open as hereinafter described, the said lamp support is provided opposite the hinge c with a keeper 0, and pivoted at 0 is a hook 0 adapted to engage the keeper 0'' and hold the lamp support 0 in a closed position. The back b ofthe box or case b is also provided with a vertically arranged slot or opening cl through which may be passed the end (Z of a gas supply pipe which is provided with a burner d which is also adapted to be passed through the slot or opening (Z, and in practice the gas pipe (Z may be passed through the wall a or connected therewith in any desired manner. The back of the box or case b is also pro vided at the top thereof with loop-shaped suspending devices 0 adapted to engage hooks or similar devices 0 secured to the wall of the building, and the back of the box or case is also provided at the bottom thereof with a hinged loop j, and secured to the wall a at fis a staple adapted to pass through the loop f, and the box or case may be secured in position by means of an ordinary padlock f, the hook or arm f of which is passed through the staple f and in this way the box or case may be locked or secured against removal to the wall of the house. The opposite sides Z) and Z) of the box or case are preferably composed of inner and outer panels 9 and g-, and the inner panels 5 are composed of transparent or translucent material preferably white glass, and the outer panels are composed of opaque material, and in practice are stenciled with the number of the house and the name of the street, as clearly indicated at h and If in Fig. 1.
One side of the box or case b, the side Z) as shown in Fig. 1 is formed into a door which is hinged at the back of the case as shown at '1', and said door is provided at the front edge thereof with keepers 2' in which is mounted a vertically movable lock bolt 2' provided with a handle 2", and the lower end of which is adapted to engage a keeper 2' secured to the frame of the box or case, and by means of this construction the door may be locked in a closed position. The front of the box or case is also preferably provided with a transparent panel j, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.
Then the box or case is to be illuminated by a gas burner, as shown in Fig. 1, the pipe (l is passed through the wall a or connected therewith in any desired manner, and the indicator is suspended from or connected with the said lamp may be lighted at any time by opening the side door if desired. The gas burner when employed may also be lighted by raising the support 0 of the lamp, and this may be done either from beneath the bottom of the box or case or by opening the door in the side thereof.
My improved street number indicator may be provided with any desired ornamentation, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A street number indicator for houses, comprising a box or case, one side of which is formed into a door, said box or case being provided in the bottom thereof with an opening having a hinged cover which opens inwardly and in the back thereof with an open ing, said box or case being also provided at the back thereof with means for securing it to a wall, the sides of the box or case being also translucent and provided with the street number of the house, which is adapted to be illuminated by a burner within the box or case.
2. A street number indicator for houses comprising a box or case provided with forwardly converging sides, one of which is formed into a door, said box or case being provided in the bottom thereof with an opening having a hinged cover which opens inwardly, and in the back thereof with an opening, said box or case being also provided at the top thereof with means for securing it to a wall, and the sides of the box or case being translucent and provided with the street number of the house, which is adapted to be illuminated by a burner within said box or case.
3. A street number indicator for houses comprising a box or case provided with forwardly converging sides, one of which is formed into a door, said box or case being provided in the bottom thereof with an opening having a hinged cover which opens inwardly;aaidaiintlie back thereof with an opening, said box or'case being also provided at the top thereof with means for securing it to a wall, and the sides of the box or case beingcomposedwofjan inner transparent panel and an outer panel of opaque material in which the number of the house is stenciled.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 7th day of April 1908.
