To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM Srnrrmxs, acitizen of the United States, residing at Ironwood, in the county of Grogebic and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candlesticks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in candle sticks of that type designed particularly for use in mines, and the object of the invention is a simple, durable and eflicient construction of a device ofthis character which is designed to efiectually hold the candle and permit its quick removal therefrom, and which is adapted to be conveniently supported in an operative position while the miner is at work, and also to be readily suspended in an inoperative position when not desired for use.

WVith this and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and then point out the novel features thereof, in the appended claim.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved candle stick, showing it applied; and, Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.

My improved candle stick is preferably constructed of sheet metal or the like, and embodies a handle 1, the rear end of which is returned, as indicated at 2, while the forward end is preferably vertically enlarged to form a cross piece 2 that is formed at its forward edges with two laterally extending vertically spaced strips 3 which project perpendicularly from the handle on the opposite side thereof from the returned end 2. The outer ends of these strips are curved rearwardly and forwardly, as shown, to form two vertically alining split rings l that constitute a candle socket that is normally of slightly smaller diameter than the candle designed to be received therein. The extremities of these strips are connected by a cross bar 5, from which is extended a finger piece 6 that passes rearwardly between the outstanding strips 3 with its rear end in divergent relation to the handle 1. The rear end of the finger piece 6 is designed to be pressed inwardly toward the handle 1, which obviously expands the split rings l, so as to increase the diameter of the candle socket and permit the candle to be readily inserted therein, said finger piece being then released, whereupon the parts spring into their normal positions, and the rings at firmly grip the inserted candle.

In order to adapt the candle stick to be conveniently supported in an operative position when it is not desirable for the miner to hold the latter in his hand, a prong 7 is extended forwardly from the front edge of the cross piece 2* between the spaced strips 3 and is adapted to be embedded in a standard or a like support; while the cross piece 2 is extended upwardly and returned upon itself opposite to the candle socket to form a downwardly facing hook S that is arranged to be engaged with the hat of the miner to hold the candle stick in position. The returned end 2 of the handle is designed to be engaged with the dinner pail of the miner, his belt or any other suitable object, so as to suspend the candle stick in an inoperative position and permit the latter to be readily carried from place to place, when not desired for use.

It will be noted that this device can be easily and cheaply manufactured, since it may be readily stamped out of an integral sheet of metal, the marginal portion being struck from the part of the metal in front of the cross piece 2, and being bent to form the strips 3 and the candle socket 4, the middle section of said part being then drawn out to form the prong 7 Having thus described the invention, I claim is:

A device of the character described constructed of an integral sheet of metal and comprising a handle returned upon itself at its rear end and vertically enlarged at its other end to form a cross piece that is extended upwardly and returned upon itself what to form a downwardly facing hook, it prong extended forwardly from the cross piece, laterally disposed strips extended from the cross piece above and below the prong and having their ends curved to form split rings constituting a candle socket, a cross bar connecting the extremities of the strips, and a finger piece extended from the cross bar and passing between and beyond the extended strips.
