Wwf-JW OSCAR A. GARLAND, OF HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS.
MATCH-B OX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1908.
Application filed March 24, 1908. Serial N o. 422,954.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
citizen of the United States, residing at Hot Springs, in the county of Garland and .5 State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in that class of match boxes which are designed to contain a plurality of ignitible pellets to be fed one at a time from the box or magazine and held in proper position for ignition within the holder that may be extended from the magazine, the pellet being held in a convenient position within the holder for lighting cigars or other objects.
The invention h'as for its object, a simple, durable and efficient construction of device of this character, which may be easily operated for the desired purpose, and the invention consists essentially in a magazine or box proper formed with a discharge opening for the ignitible pellets, in connection with a holder pivotally connected to the magazine, so as to be swung in an inoperative position over or across the discharge opening of the magazine, means being provided for depositing one pellet at a time within the holder, so that the latter may be swung outwardly from the magazine, and the pellet rolled to the free end or extremity of the holder, where it may be ignited by peculiar means herein set forth, for any desired purpose. And the invention also consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim. o For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved match box, showing the holder in projected position; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof, with the holder swung back to an inoperative position; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the box, the cover of the box proper or magazine being removed; and, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the holder employed in igniting the pellet.
Corresponding and like parts .are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Be it known that I, Oscar A. GARLAND, f
The magazine or box proper of my improved match box, designated l, may be of any desired shape or size, and composed of any desired material, the box being preferably of a size to be carried in ones pocket. It may be provided with a lid of any desired character or construction, so that the box or magazine 1 may be easily filled with pellets. The pellets may be composed of any desired combustible materials or ingredients, coated with any of the ordinary substances that will become ignited by friction or concussion, and they are designed to be fed one at a time out of an aperture 2 in the bottom of the magazine l.
3 designates a cutoff, which may be 0f any desired construction or desion for closing the aperture 2 unt'l it is desired to discharge a pellet therefrom.
The holder 4 of my improved match box, is pivoted thereto at one end, so as to occupy, when not in use, a position lying entirely across the bottom of the magazine, underneath the aperture 2.
When it is desired to use the holder for the purpose of igniting one of the pellets, the cutoff 3 is opened to permit the pellet to drop through the aperture 2 into a channel 5 that extends longitudinally along one face of the holder 4, and which is preferably formed by two spaced longitudinal flanges G, as shown. The pellet is dropped into the channel 5 of the holder at the point 7, indicated in the drawing, and is rolled towards the free end of the holder, the latter being turned out from the magazine, as illustrated in Fig. l. The pellet is then ignited by means of an igniting linger S designed to strike the same with an abrasive force, or by concussion, said finger being carried on the free end of a spring arm 9 which is secured to the holder at its opposite end, and which is provided with a knob 10, by which it may be retracted, so that when released it will strike the pellet held in the channel 5 at the opening l1 formed in the free end of the holder 4. If it is desired to at once ignite another pellet, it is clear that the same may be dropped through the aperture 2 into ones hand, and manually placed in the opening l1 for ignition by the finger S.
From the foregoing description, in connec- 'tion with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple, effective and attractive construction of magazine match box of this character, which will occupy a minimum amount of space when not in use, owing to the fact that the holder et may be swung around to occupy an inoperative position across the magazine or box l, and which n ay be easily operated to deposit an ignitible pellet in the holder, the latter being swung around on its pivot and projected out from the magazine, so that the latter ma;v be used as a handle for the holder when the pellet is being ignited and applied to a cigar, or used for other purposes.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim is:
l. A. device of the character described, comprising a magazine for ignitible pellets, said magazine being formed with a discharge aperture, a holder pivotally connected to said magazine and arranged to be swung across said aperture to receive a pellet discharged therefrom, said holder being formed with a longitudinal channel, and a spring arm connected to said holder and formed with an nel, and a spring arm connected to said holder and formed with an igniting finger adapted to project into the said'channel, at the said opening. l
In testimony whereof l afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR GARLAND. [n s] lllitnesses A. lV. MEADOWS, LewisA BINGHAM.
