To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH B. POLK a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenwood; in the county of Johnson and. .State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Processing Canned Goods, of which the following is a specification.
In the operation of processing packaged goods with apparatus embodying the invention described and claimed in my Patent No. 742,488, which was issued October 27, 1903,
difficulty is sometimes experienced by the reason of'the fact that the cans become slightly ofiset on each other so that the blow, resulting from suddenstoppage of the rollingreciprocation, is delivered by the extended flangeof the head of one can against the body of the nextcan immediately under the flange of the headand thisfblow sometimes results in a breaking of the solder joint between the flange of the head and the main body of the can, and the object of my present invention is to provide means for preventing this injury while at the same time retaining all the advantages ofthe apparatus described in iny aforesaid patent.

In the drawings 10 indicates a retort having a removable door 11 at one end and a pair of tracks 12 in the bottom. The retort lQis swung upon horizontal pintles 13 by any suitable means. Tracks 12 are adapted to receive a truck 14 comprising a plurality of superimposed tracks or guideways 15,
' each of which is adapted to receive a plurality of tubes 16 each of said tubes comprising a middle tubular portion having a plurality of openings 16 through its sides and reinforced at each end by rings 16". The internal diameter of the tube 16 is somewhat greater than the external diameter of the cans 17 and its length'is sufiicient to contain a number or" cans arranged end to end. In practice the tubes 16 .are filled with cans and the filled tubes rolled into the tracks 15 in truck 14, only enough of said tubes being inserted in a particular track to leave suficient gl'GOlll for a complete rotation of the tubes longitudinally along the tracks.
The operation is as follows: When the re tort has been closed and steam introduced therein the retort is reciprocated and the tubes 16 thereby given a rolling reciprocation in the tracks, coming suddenly to a stop at each end of the movement, and the cans in the tube being thus given a rolling-"reciprocation and a sudden jar while being subjected to the heating action of the steam. During this rolling reciprocation of the cans, however, they are entirely protected against injury because the cans of one series cannot come into actual engagement with the cans of another. The tubes 16 being perforated permit a free circulation of the heat around the cans.
I claim as my invention:
