PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK E. GAGE, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO VENEER BARREL MACHINE 60., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BARREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters lfatent No. 754,923, dated March 15, 1904.
Application filed July 9, 1902. Serial No. 114,911. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK E. GAGE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Dayton, county of Montgomery, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of my invention is to provide in a barrel having a removable head an improved, cheap, and efficient structure for preventing leakage or sifting out of the contents through the seam between the head and the body of the barrel. I accomplish this object by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a cylindrical barrel constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan of one of the heads of said barrel. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the same, showing the packing material in-its normal form before the insertion of said head into the barrel.
The device shown consists of a veneer barrel having a cylindrical body 1, strengthened by the usual hoops 2. Each of the heads 3 is circular and is provided with a semicircular groove 4:, extending around the periphery of its rim. A strip of packing material 5, preferably circular in cross-section and in the form of a rope, is wound around the rim of the head 3 and securely seated within the groove 4. It is preferred to make the heads 3 of suitable diameter toloosely fit the ends of the barrel-body 1 and to make the packingstrips 5 of such diameter that same will be compressed when the head 3 is forced into the barrel-body, and thus insure a tight joint at the periphery of said head. The heads 3 are secured against displacement longitudinally of the barrel-body 1 by means of lining- hoops 6 and 7, which are securely fastened to the barrel-body at the inner and outer sides of the heads 3.
The operation of the device shown is as follows: The inner liningehoops 6, the lower head 3, and its outer lining-hoop 7 are securely fastened in position at the time of the construction of the barrel. After the barrel is filled the upper head 3 is pushed downward into position against its inner lining-hoop 6, the packing-strip 5 being compressed through contact with the adjacent sides of the barrel-body and being thereby caused to conform to the irregularities of the surface of said barrel-body, thus tightly filling all crevices between the head and body and preventing the contents from sifting out. Further additional security against egress of the contents is obtained by each of the lining-hoops of each head closing the space between the said heads and the interior of the barrel, the hoops extending on each of the sides of the heads, thus further preventing ingress of extraneous material.
It will be seen that some of the details of the construction shown may be altered without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not confine myself to such details, except as hereinafter limited in the claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A barrel having lining-hoops arranged at its extremities on the interior thereof, heads seating on said lining-hoops and formed with peripheral grooves, with packing-strips arranged in the grooves and extending beyond the periphery of said heads, said heads being of less diameter than the interior of the barrel, and further lining-hoops secured on the interior of the barrel and engaging the opposite faces of the said heads, said lining-hoops of each head closing the space between said head and the interior periphery of the barrel on each of the faces of said heads.
Signed at Dayton, Ohio, this 5th day of July,
FRANK E. GAGE. WVitnesses:
