mum I W JOHN EDWARD WALLIS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FASTEN ER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
Application filed March 31, 1908. Serial No. 424,446.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN EDWARD WAL- L IS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to holding devices or fasteners, and more particularly those which are designed for attachment to an article of dress or other suitable mount whereby they may serve to support such objects as a boutonniere, a lead pencil or for holding any object that has a stem which may be e11- gaged by gripping means forming part of such holding device or fastener.
My invention is fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of the fastener forming the subject of my invention; Fig. 2, is a plan view of such device in position to grip an object; Fig. 3, is a plan view of the same in position to receive an object, Figs. 4 and 5, are perspective views illustrating modified forms of the structure in which retaining means are provided for the attaching member or pin, and Fig. 6, is a view of another form of structure embodying my invention.
As shown in Fig. 1, the device comprises eyes 1 which are inter-connected as shown and are carried by supporting members 2, substantially vertical, which are joined at the bottom by an olfset integral portion forming a duplex spring loop 3. A pin 4 is provided which may be continuous with one of the runs forming one of the eyes 1. The pin 4 serves to attach the fastener or holder to a garment such as the lapel of a coat, a ladys waist or a mans vest, and in orderthat such fastener or holder may be retained in place when so disposed, I may provide keepers for the same, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5.
In Fig. 4, the keeper is formed by increasing the amount of material in one of the substantially vertical members 2; doubling the same and extending such doubled portion laterally as indicated at 5; the end of the same being suitably bent to form a hook 6.
In the structure shown in Fig. 5, the keeper or catch is formed by extending the opposite run forming one of the loops 1 into a depending leg 7, with a lateral offset 5 carrying a catch orkeeper 6 In some instances, I may provide a pin of the ordinary hinged type such as shown at 8 in Fig. 6, in lieu of a pin integral with the runs forming the improved fastening device.
By squeezing the vertical members 2, the eyes 1 are pressed toward each other forming an opening as illustrated in Fig. 3. lVhen in this position, the stem of the flower can readily be inserted, the lower end passing through and being guided by the duplex loop 3, which forms a spring. When the members 2 are released, they will separate by reason of the spring-like character of the connecting loops 3, and the eyes 1 will grip the stem of the flower or other object passed through the same.
The structure as shown is made of a continuous section of wire bent into shape. It is obvious, however, that it may be made of a plurality of wire sections, suitably connected together, such as shown in Fig. 6, without departing from my invention. For use as a flower holder on a mans coat, it will be relatively small, and may be made in larger sizes to receive lead pencils and other objects.
I claim:
1. The combination, in a holder or fastener, of a pair of inter-connected eyes, supports for the same, a spring connection for said supports, and a pin carried by one of the eyes.
2. The combination, in a holder or fastener, of a pair of inter-connected eyes, supports for the same, a spring connection for said supports, and a pin carried by one of the eyes, the whole formed of a single run of wire bent into shape.
3. The combination, in a holder or fastener, of a pair of inter-connected eyes, vertical members supporting the same, a spring connection for said vertical members, and a pin carried by one of the eyes.
4. The combination, in a holder or fastener, of a pair of inter-connected eyes, vertical members supporting the same, a spring connection for said vertical members, and a pin carried by one of the eyes, the whole formed of a single run of wire bent into shape.
5. The combination of a holder or fastener comprising a pair of inter-connected eyes, supports for the same, said eyes being offset with respect to said supports, a spring portion connecting said supports, and a pin extending from one of said eyes.
6. The combination of a holder or fastener comprising a pair of inter-connected eyes, supports for thesame, said eyes being offset with respect to said supports, a spring portion connecting said supports, and a pin. extending from one of said eyes, the Whole formed of a single run of wire bent into shape;
7. The combination Of 'fLallQlClBl"O1='faS-- tener comprising a pair of inter-connected eyes, vertical members snpportingthe; same, said eyes beingoffset with'respect ,tosaid vertical members, a looped portion connectiugsaidavertical members and forming a spring, and; a pin extending -from oneof said eyes.
S.-The combination ofaa holder or=ifas.-
tener comprisinga pair of inter-connected eyes, vertical members supporting, the same, said eyes being offset with respect-to said, vertical-linembers, a looped-.iportion connecting-said vertical: members and-forming, a spring, ;and a pin, extendingirom one of; saideyes, thewhole formed of a singlerun; of wire bent into shape.
9. The'combination of a pair of interconnected eyes disposedsubstantially in a hori-; zontal position, ertical members depending 1 from said eyes, a duplex loop, connected i to and offset with respectto said ,yerticalz ne nhers and forming a spring; and a pin carried: by one of said inter-connected eyes l. said structure being made of a single continuous run of wire.
1O. The combination, in a holder or fastener, of a pair of inter-connected eyes, supports for the same, a spring connection for said supports, a pin, and a keeper for said pin, said structure being formed of a single continuous run vof wire.
11. The combination of a pair of interconnected eyes disposed substantially in a horizontalposition,;,vertical members de pending from said eyes, a duplex loop connected to and offset with respect to said verticalmembers and forming a spring,,a pin carried by; -one of saidinter-connected eyes, ancl-a:keep er= or catch for said pin, said structure being made, of a single continuous run ofzwire.-
12; A holder comprising a pair of interconnectedeyes, a spring portion for causing said; .J eyes to; grip an object placed within them-,and a pin wherebysaid holder may be secured to an article of dress.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my nameto thisspecifieation, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
