To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs FINK, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilatore, of which the following is'a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invent-ion relates to ventilators, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class desired for use in, or in connection with, a window, for the purpose of admitting fresh air into a room or compartment of a dwelling or other building; a further object being to provide an improved device of the class specified which may be used for exhausting' foul air from a room or compartment, as well as for admitting fresh air thereto.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying .drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by Vsuitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which g- Figure 1 is an outside view of a window, showing my improvement applied both for admitting fresh air to, and exhausting foul airfrom a room or compartment; Fig. 2 a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 2a a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing only parts of the construction shown in Fig. 2, and showing said parts in a different position; Fig. 2b a side view of a hook shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 3 a partial vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a perspective detail view of a part of the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3; Fig. 5 a partial section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1, and showing my improvement applied for the purpose of exhausting fo'ul air from a room or compartment; Fig. 6 an end view of` the device, as shown in Fig. 5; Fig. 7 a view similar to Fig. 5, and showing certain details thereof on an enlarged scale; Fig. S a plan view of a portion of the device as shown in and 6, and at the top of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 9 the side elevation of a strip which forms a part of a register device shown in Figs. 5 and 7.
Then my improvement is applied for the purpose of admitting fresh air to a room or compartment, it is placed in the bottom of the window, and may be in the bottom of the frame beneath the lower sash, as shown in Fig. 1, or in the bottom of said sash; and when the said device is applied for the purpose of exhausting foul air from the room or compartment, it may be placed in the top portion of the frame, as shown in Fig. l, above the upper sash or in the upper part of said sash.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a an ordinary window frame in which are placed the upper sash a2 and the lower sash a3, and in the practice of my invention, I provide a ventilator device o, which is placed, in the form of construction shown, beneath the bottom sash, for the purpose of letting air into a room or compartment, and, if desired, above the upper sash for the purpose of exhausting air from t-he room or compartment. In Fig. 2 of the drawing, I have shown in horizontal section, the preferred form of the device when used for the purpose of admitting air into the room or compartment, which consists of a support which is oblong and rectangular in form, and adapted to be placed in the frame immediately below the .bottom sash, and which is provided with a central opening o2, at the opposite sides of which are preferably placed transparent panels o3.
The support Z) comprises, in the form of construction shown, a rectangular frame, and on the outer side thereof, and inclosing the central opening o2, is an oblong casing o, preferably provided with top and bottom transparent panels o2, and back or outer transparent panels o3, and the outer or back wall of the casing c, in which the transparent panels o3 are placed, is preferably tapered at the ends thereof, the end transparent panel o3 being inclined inwardly as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the extreme end portions of said casing o are enlarged or tapered outwardly at the bottom and back and top portions thereof, as clearly shown at c, so as to give the said end portions of the casing o a bell-shaped or flaring form, and said end portions of the casing c are closed by open wire or mesh work c, through which the air is free to pass.
Extending transversely across the casing c at top and bottom thereof, are supports d, between which is placed a vertically arranged standard or rod cl2, which is approximately centrally arranged in the casing o, and mounted on the rod (Z2, and rotatable thereon, is an inwardly directed wing or vane (Z3, provided with a backwardly directed and weighted arm (Z4, which balances the wing or vane (Z3, and enables it to turn freely, and with a minimum of friction on the rod (Z5. i
Hinged to the back portion of the casing c andat two points on the opposite sides of the transverse center portions thereof, are plates (Z5, which are adapted to swing freely on their hinges at and which, in one position, close one end of the casing c as shown at the left of Fig. 2, and open the opposite end of said casing, as shown at the right of Fig. 2, and loosely connected with the plates (Z5, are links (Z5, which are also loosely connected with the wing or vane (Z5, and by reason of this construction, said plates (Z5, and the wing or vane (Z5, move together in the operation of the device, as hereinafter described.
On the inner side of the support b, and inclosing the central opening Z22 therein, in the form of construction shown at the bottom of Fig. 1, and in Fig. 2, is an air register e. 1t consists of a frame c2, inclosing the opening (Z2, and having outwardly directed side plates c3, which are wider at the top than at the bottom, and in the top portions of which are segmental slots et. Hinged to the bottom of the frame e2, is a separate metal frame c5, preferably7 provided with a transparent panel c, and inwardly directed side plates c7, which overlap the side plates c of the frame c2, and which are provided with pins es, which pass through the slots c* in the side plates c5. Hinged to the top of the frame e5, as shown at e, is a top plate f, at the rear edge of which is a thumb piece f2, by which said top piece f may be raised when desired.A
The frame c2, which constitutes the base portion of the air register device c, is hinged to the support Z) at one side, as shown at ,f3 in Fig. 2, and said support is provided at the opposite side with a pivoted catch or clip ft, adapted to hold the frame e2, or the register device c in a closed position, and as thus constructed the register device c may be opened at th'e top by raising the top plate which is hinged to the frame c5, or by moving the frame c5 inwardly, or by opening the entire register device or swinging it on the hinge f3, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The operation of this device for the purposeof admitting fresh air to a room or compartment, is as follows. Suppose the air outside of the building to be moving in the direction of the arrow x shown in Fig. 2, the said air passing through the casing c will operate on the wing or vane (Z3, and will swing said wing or vane and the plates (Z5 into the position shown in said figure, and the left hand end of the casing c will be closed, and the air will pass freely in through the opposite end of said casing, as indicated by the arrow m2,' and if the register c on the l inner side of the window, or of the support be open in any of the ways specified in the last paragraph, the said air will freely enter the room or compartment. If the wind on the outside of the building be moving in a direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow (c, the plate (Z5 at the right end of the casing c will be closed and the plate (Z5 at the opposite end will be opened and the air will pass freely in` through the left end of the casing c into the room or compartment.
By Vplacing transparent panels b5 in the opposite ends of the support Z2, and by placing similar transparent panels in the frame c5 of the register device c, and in the top, bottom and outer walls of the casing c, my improved ventilating device as shown at the bottom of Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2, will not obstruct materially the passage of light into the room or compartment, and the operation of the parts (Z3 and (Z5 may be readily seen at all times, and any dust or dirt that may collect anywhere in the ventilating device, may also be clearly seen, and the said ventilating device may be thoroughly cleaned at any time by fully opening the'same, which operation may be accomplished by swinging the register' device c into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. Q.
used for the purpose of exhausting foul air from a room or compartment, as shown at the top of Fig. l, the outer portion thereof, including the casing c, is exactly the same as when said ventilating device is used for he purpose of admitting fresh air to the room or compartment, as shown at the bottom of Fig. 1, and in Fig. 2, and .if desired the register device c at the inner side of the support b, may be the same when the ventilator device is used for the purpose of exhausting air, as when it is used for the purpose of admitting air; but when the said ventilator device is used for the purpose of exhausting air from the room or compartment, l prefer the register device, shown at g in Figs. 5 to S inclusive, which consists of a casing or hood g2, hinged at one side to the support as shown at I(/3 in Fig. S, and comprising a base flange member g4, and outwardly flaring walls g5, the top and bottom walls g5 being provided with inwardly directed transverse flanges g, between which are mounted rotatable transverse strips g5, similar to the rotatable strips of a shutter and preferably composed of glass. The rotatable strips '(/5 of the register device g, are provided at one end with trunnions g5, on which are rigidly mounted disks or wheels g, provided with eccentric pins g1", with which are connected links gu, and the disk or wheel gf" on the trunnion of the bottom strip L(/T of the register device is provided with a` bevel-gear gm. Then my improved ventilating device is which meshes with the bevel-gear Q12, and the shaft g13 is provided at its lower end with a head or handle 915 by which it may be manipulated, for the purpose of opening and closing the strips g7 of the register device g.
The hood or casing of the register device g being hinged at gli, may be swung horizcntally into an open position or Vinto a closed position, as may be desired, and the support of the shaft (/13 is connected with the base flange or rim f/t of said hood or case ing, and the shaft Q13 as will be understood, swings with the hood or casing of the said register device g', when the latter is opened or closed. By reason of this construction, the shaft 913 is preferably made quite short and may be operated by a key device manip ulated from the floor, or by a person standing on the fieor of the room or compartment; and the object of hinging the register device ,7, is to provide access to the casing c at the back of the support I), when the ventilator device is used for the purpose of exhausting` foul air from a room or compartment, in order that the interior of the casing c may be thoroughly cleaned at any time.
The reason for making the transverse strips (/T of the register device g of glass, is to permit the passage of light therethrough. The transverse strips f/T of the register device g, are bound with sheet metal as shown at /i in Figs. 7 and 9, so that there will be no danger of breaking said strips in the operation of opening and closing the same; and the metal bindings 7L of the strips g?, carry the trunnions gs, of the strips g?, on which the disks or wheels ,Q9 are mounted, and one of the side edges of each of the strips gT is also preferably provided with a cushion or pad device 72.2, adapted to come in contact with the adjacent or corresponding strip 97, as shown in Fig. 7, when the register g is closed so as to prevent the breaking of the said strips ,(/T in the operation of opening and closing the said register device g.
It will be understood that the transparent features or elements of the support Z2, and of the casing c, and of the register devices c and g, are not absolutely essential features of my invention, but are preferred for the purposes herein specified; and it will also be seen that the outer side portion of the ventilator, or that portion thereof which is secured to the outer side of the support or frame b, is exactly the same in construction and operation, whether the said ventilator device be used for admitting fresh air to a room er compartment, or exhausting foul air therefron. And my invention is not limited to any particular form of register on the inner side of the support of frame though 1 prefer the form of register c, shown at the bottom of Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2. It will also be observed that the operation of the parts (Z3 and d of the casing e, will be the same when the device is used for the purpose of exhausting air from a room or compartment as when said device is used for the purpose of admitting air to a room er compartment as hereinbefore described.
ln F 2g I have shown the main parts of the ventilator, as shown in Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale, and in Fig. 2b 1 have shown one of the link members ZT which is made, at one end, in the form of a hook, and in practice these links or hook devices, are loosely connected with the plates d, and are connected with the wing or vane d* by means of the hook at the end thereof and rings or eyes connected with said wing or vane for this purpose, and with this construction the links or hook members c 7 may be detached from the wing or vane d, as will be readily understood.
1n Fig. 2a 1 have also shown both ends of the casing c open so that the air is free to pass therethrough or there-into from either end, and it will be understood that this is the position of the parts when there is not much wind blowing', and in order to hold the plates (Z5 in this position, the links or hook members Zn are detached from the wing or vane Z3 and are connected with the end portion of the casing c as clearly shown in said Fig. 2a.
YHaving fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a ventilator device, a support provided with a central opening', an oblong casing secured to one side of said support and inclosing said opening, said casing being open at both ends, a wing or vane pivoted centrally in said casing and adapted to swing in a horizontal plane therein, wing plates pivoted to the inner wall of the back of said casing on the opposite sides of the central portion thereof and adapted to swing in the same plane as said wing or vane, and link devices pivoted to the inner sides of said wing plates and adapted to be detachably connected with said wing or vane, said wing plates being adapted to alternately open and close the opposite end portions of said casing.

In a ventilator device, a support provided with a central opening, an oblong casing secured to one side of said support and inclosing said opening, said casing being open at both ends, a wing or vane pivoted centrally in said casing and adapted to swing in a horizontal plane therein, wing plates pivoted to the inner wall of the back of said casing on the opposite sides of the central portion thereof and adapted to swing in the same plane as said Wing or vane, and link devices pivoted to the inner sides of said wing plates and adapted to be detachably connected with said wing or vane, said wing .vided with a central opening, an oblong casing secured to one side of said support and inclosing said opening, said casing being 'open at both ends, a wing or vane pivoted centrally in said casing and adapted to swing in a horizontal plane therein, wing plates pivoted to the inner wall of the back of said casing on the opposite sides of the central portion thereofl and adapted 'to swing in the sanie plane as said wing or vane, and link devices pivoted to the inner sides of said wing plates and adapted to be detachably connected with said wing or vane, said wing plates being adapted to alternately open and close the opposite end portions of said casing, and said link devices being also adapted to be detachably connected with the end portions of said casing so as to hold both of said wing plates in an open position, the ends of said casing being also provided with screens. f

In a ventilator device, a support provided with a central opening, an oblong casing secured to one side of said support and inclosing said opening, said casing being open at both ends, a wing or vane pivoted centrally in said casing and adapted to swing in a horizontal plane therein, wing plates pivoted to the inner wall of the back of said casing on the opposite sides of the central portion thereof and adapted to swing in the same plane as said wing or vane, and link devices pivoted to the inner sides of said wing plates and adapted to be detachably connected with said wing or vane, said wing plates being adapted to alternately open and close the opposite end portions of said casing, and an air register device secured to the opposite side of said support and inclosing said opening.

In a ventilator device, a support provided with a central opening, an oblong casing secured to one side of said support and inclosing said opening, said casing being open at bot-h ends, a wing or vane pivoted centrally in said casing and adapted to swing in a horizontal plane therein, wing plates pivoted to the inner wall of the back of said casing on the opposite sides of the central portion thereof and adapted to swing in the saine plane as said wing or vane, and link devices pivoted to the inner sides of said wing plates and adapted to be detachably connected with said wing or vane, said wing plates being adapted to alternately open and close the opposite end portions of said casing, and said link devices being also adapted to be detachably connected with the end portions of said casing so as to hold both of said wing plates in an open position, said support being also provided with an air register device which is secured to the opposite side thereof and incloses the opening therein.
