3 Claims. (Cl. 98-43) This invention relates to ventilators; and has special reference to ventilators of the type that are in openings through walls for the purpose of exhausting fumes or other undesirable odors from the inside of rooms or buildings, and/or for the purpose of blowing fresh air into rooms or buildings.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved ventilator comprising a metallic casing or, wall box designed and adapted to be mounted in an opening in the wall of a building and enclosing a blower and a motor for operating the blower to exhaust fumes and other undesirable odors from within the room or building,
in combination with means for shifting the position of the blower and the motor to reverse the effect of the operation thereof and force air into the room or building.
Another object of the invention is to pro- 29 vide an improved ventilator of the type and character mentioned including a louver pivotally supported outwardly from the blower and means for operating said louver member'in order to open and to close the opening through the.
casing or box to permit the passage of air.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the type and character mentioned having both inner and outer louver members and means for simultaneously moving them to open and to close the casing or wall box.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the type and character mentioned comprising novel mechanism for reversing the position of the blower and motor so as to enable the same to operate to exhaustL fumes or air from within the room or building or to force air into the room or building, as desired. 7 Another object of the invention is to provide an improved ventilator device assembled as an entire structure for mounting in a wall openingand comprising a metallic casing or wall box having the blower device mounted therein and" equipped with its operating connections, and
means for securing the casing or wall box to the wall around the margin of the opening therethrough on the inside of the wall.
Other objects will appear from the following description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig.- 1 is an inner end elevation of my improved ventilating device with the louver element closed.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the casing or box showing the blower and motor therefor and the connections for operating the louver members.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the motor mounting.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view approximately on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
In the embodiment shown, my improved metallic casing or wall box comprises a bottom wall 1, two vertical side walls 2 and 3 and a top wall 4. The outer ends of these walls are formed with an inwardly extended flange 5, the marginal edges of which are provided with inwardly extended strengthening portions 6. The flanges 5 thus reinforced constitute an appropriate frame at the outer end of the wall box for cooperation with a louver member 7.
The inner ends of the walls 1, 2, 3 and 4 have outwardly turned flanges 8 forming a strengthening frame around the inner end of the wall casing or box. A frame 9 engages the inner ends of the walls of the casing or box and has an outer marginal flange 10 arranged to abut against the inner surface of the building wall 11. Fasteners 12 pass through the frame 9 and through the flanges 8 and into the frame 13 that is mounted in the opening through the building 0 wall.- The inner marginal edges 14 of the frame 9 are extended outwardly into the wall casing or box to obtain the desired strength. A louver member 15 is provided for the inner end of the Wall casing or box and is operative to open and 35 to close the same.

Springs 19 connect these hinges 16 with the walls 4 and are effective to operatesaid hinges in a direction and to an.
extent to close the louver member '7, but will yield to permit said louver member '7 to be swung outwardly to open the outer end of the wall casing or box. When extended outwardly, the louver 7 constitutes a guard or shield to prevent falling snow or rain, etc. from entering the wall box.
The inner louver member 15 is supported by a pair of angular hinges 20. One end of each of said hinges 20 is attached to the louver member 15 and the other ends of said hinge members 20 are mounted on pivots 21 supported by brackets 22 attached to the frame 9 below the opening into the wall box. Springs 23 connect the hinges 20 with the lower wall 1 and operate to hold the louver member 15 in closed position but will yield to permit said louver. member to be swung downwardly and inwardly in order to open the inner end of the wall box.

The links 26 and 27 are' pivotally connected with the lever 24 beyond opposite sides of the pivot 25, so that downward movement of the inner end of the lever 24, when the louver members 7 and 15 are in closed positions, will operate the links 26 and 27 in directions and to an extent to open both louver members, as will be understood by referj -Ver when the louver members 7 and 15 are in p the inclined positions shown.
The motor 31 is supported by a bracket 32 mounted for turning movements on a standard 33 rigid with and projecting vertically from the bottom wall 1 of the wall box. A base plate 34 is attached to the bottom wall 1 and constitutes astrengthening reinforcement. The motor 31 operates a fan blower 35. The motor and the blower are completely enclosed within the wall box and do not in any way interfere with the opening and closing of the louvers. The bracket 1 "lower end-thereof an arcuate series of detents 32. constitutes a rotary pedestal and at the 36 are rigidly secured in holes 37. The two detents at the ends of the series project downwardly beyond the others and are designed and arranged to engage in appropriate indentations 38 formed in the upper side of the base plate 34.
These two detents at the ends of the series of detents 36 cooperate with the indentations 38 to hold and retain the motor in either of its two adjustments. The said two detents '36 at the ends of the series of detents constitute latches to engage in the indentations 38 and thereby hold the motor in proper position when the blower is directed outwardly or inwardly. The detents 36 also constitute dentals for engagement with an arcuate rack 39 formed in the inner end of a lever 40. The lever 40 is mounted on a pivot 41 in connection with the base plate 34. Said lever 40 projects inwardly through a slot 42 in the lower portion of the frame 9 and has a hole 43 adapted to receive the hooked end of the rod 29 in order to operate said lever 40 in either direction. Thus, the lever 40 may be operated to turn the bracket pedestal 32to position in. which the blower 35'is extended outwardly from the motor or to position in which said blower 35 is extended inwardly from the motor. Accordingly, by this invention the blower may be adjusted to position in which it will exhaust the fumes and air from the room or to position in which it will force air into the building or room. By this construction andarrangement, the entire assembly can -be mounted as an integral unit by fastening the inner panel" to the inside of the wall of the building. This obviates the usual undesirable requirement of mounting parts of 'the device on the outside of through openings 45 in the bottoms of said depressions.
It is now clear that this invention obtains all of its intended objects and purposes in .a highly efiicient and satisfactory manner. The entire device is of highly simplified'construction and the means for locating the fan in a fixed position to deliver air either inwardly or outwardly is very effective, simple and satisfactory.
I claim:
1. A ventilator of the character described adapted to be mounted in an opening in a wall and comprising a vertical. spindle, a fan mounted on a bracket revolvably supported on the spindle, teeth on the bracket arranged circumferential to the spindle, a lever, and an arcuate rack on the lever adapted to engage said teeth.
2. A ventilator of the character described adapted to be mounted in an opening'in a wall and comprising a vertical spindle, a fan mounted on a bracket revolvably supported on the spindle, teeth on the bracket arranged circumferential to the spindle, a lever, an arcuate rack on the lever adapted to engage said teeth, and detents adapted to latch the bracket in either of two selected positions.
3. A ventilator of the character described adapted to be mounted in an opening in a wall and including side walls, an outer frame, an inner frame, closure members pivoted respectively to said frames, a spindle, a fan carried by a bracket revolvably mounted on the spindle,
a circumferential series of teeth on the bracket,
a lever, an arcuate rack on the lever adapted to engage the teeth, said lever having its end opposite the rack extending through a slot in the inner frame, and detent mechanism adapted to latch the bracket in either of two selected positions.
