FORM FOR ANIMAL-HEADS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERNARD COHEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Form for Animal-Heads, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to animal heads such as shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 832,456, granted to me October 2, 1906.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved form for animal heads, made of soft rubber, having a skull portion,

an upper aw and snout portion, and a lower jaw or tongue, all rendered practically indestructible and sufficiently flexible, at the same time properly displaying the head of a fur skin fashioned over the form and without danger of losing its shape.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement as applied to the animal head on a fur boa; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal central section of the improvement as applied to the head of a fur skin; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improvement; Fig. a is a transverse section of the same; Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan view of the lower jaw, its extension and tongue; and Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the temporary sustaining block for the form while fashioning the head of the fur skin over the form.

The head A of a fur skin A is fashioned over a form B made of soft rubber, and consisting essentially of upper and lower sections G and D. The upper section C consists of a hollow skull portion C, an upper jaw C and a snout C the jaw C being provided with integral teeth C as plainly indicated inthe drawings, and the snout C is connected with the upper jaw C and the skull C" by a rib C, so as to strengthen the upper section. The lower section D consists essentially of a lower jaw D provided with integral teeth D and from the rear end of the lower jaw D extends an extension D reach- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing backward approximately to the middle of the skull portion 0., as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. From the rear edge of the extension D of the lower section D extends integrally a tongue D which is bent back and passed through a slot D, so as to project forwardly on the top of the jaw D between the side teeth D of the lower jaw D. The upper and lower sections C and D of the form B are fastened together, and for this purpose the sides of the extension D and the sides of the skull portion C are connected with each other by a rabbet joint, and the joint portions are connected with each other by cement or other adhesive substance E, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. l.

Now by the arrangement described the up per and lower sections C and D are firmly connected with each other in such a manner that the jaws C and Dstand apart, thus displaying the animal head with an open mouth and with the tongue D displayed or appearing bet-ween the jaws C and D. A transverse partition 0 extends downwardly from the forward end of the skull portion C, so as to close the rear part of the mouth above the tongue D*, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The skull portion C is open at the rear end, and at the rear portion of its bottom, to permit the insertion of a temporary retaining block F, preferably made of cork and provided with a handle F. The form B with the retaining block F in position is placed in the head A of the fur skin, and the latter is then fashioned over the said form B so as to give a shape to the head A corresponding to the form B, the latter resembling as near as possible the head, upper jaw, lower jaw and snout portion of the animal. When fashioning the head A of the fur skin over the form B, the head A, is sufficiently wet to allow proper drawing of the fur skin and fashioning the same corresponding to the contour or outer surface of the form 13, and when this has been done pins or the like are passed through the edges of the skin and the block F, to hold the skin tight until the latter is dried on the form B,

for the skin to retain its shape over the form. The edges of the skin are then sewed together in the usual manner, and then the pins as well as the block F are withdrawn to leave the form 13 in position on the head A, it being, however, understood that the form B forms a mold for the skin of the head A.

The eyes G of the head A are fastened in place by wires G or other means passing through the fur skin and the skull portion C of the head, as indicated in Fig. 2.

From the foregoing it will be seen that by having the form B made in two sections with a hollow skull portion C and an extension D, it is evident that when the head A is alternately pressed and released on top and bottom, then the aws C D move from and towards each other, that is, on pressing they move apart, and on releasing the pressed portions the resiliency of the form B causes the jaws to move towards each other.

It will be readily understood that by the arrangement described, the side joint between the skull portion C and the extension D practically forms a hinge for allowing movement of the aws as above explained. It will further be noticed that by making the lower section D in the manner described,

the tongue D forms an integral part of the lower section, which can be readily molded with the tongue D extending rearwardly, and then by bending the tongue D" back and passing it through the slot D, it assumes its proper position in the mouth of the head, as illustrated in the drawings and above described. 7

By making the several parts of the form B of soft rubber, the latter is practically rendered indestructible and maintains at all times the head A in proper shape.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. An animal head provided with a form of soft rubber over which the head of a fur skin is to be fashioned, the form comprising a skull, an upper jaw portion and a lower jaw portion, the lower jaw portion having an integral tongue at its rear, and being slotted transversely at the base of the tongue, the tongue being bent backwardly upon itself, and passed through the slot for the purpose set forth.

2. An animal head provided with a lower jaw of soft rubber, and an integral tongue projecting from the jaw, said tongue being of soft rubber over which the head of a furskin is to be fashioned, the said form being made in sections of which one comprises a hollow skull and an upper jaw, and the other section comprises the lower aw and a rearward extension, the latter and the sides of the said hollow skull being connected with each other by a rabbet joint, and an adhesive substance for connecting the joint portions with each other.

5. An animal head provided with a lower jaw made of soft rubber and having an integral extension, and an integral. tongue extending rearwardly from the said extension, the latter having a slot for the passage of the tongue on bending the latter back and passing it through the slot.

6. An animal head provided with a lower jaw of soft rubber and having a rearward extension, a tongue on the said extension and projecting forward on top of the lower jaw, and teeth integral on the said lower and between which extends the said tongue.

7. An animal head comprising a hollow form of flexible material, and an integral tongue which is bent forward, the form being provided with a slot through which the tongue passes.
