W. H.'PERKINS. SHADE HOLDER. ,APPLIOATION 11.51) MAR. 23,1908.

WWW 4 v 5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER H. PERKINS, OF CHESHIRE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WATERBURY MFG. 00., OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
SHADE-HOLDER.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I/VALTER H. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cheshire, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shade-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1 a side view of a shade holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a plan View of the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in shade holders such as are adapted for use in holding shades in electric lamp sockets; that is, those that are provided with an inner ring adapted to be clamped to an electric lamp socket, and an outer ring in which the shade is su ported, the object being the construction o' a holder in which the outer ring is comparatively rigid with relation to the inner ring and which can be readily placed upon and removed from an electric lamp socket; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
As shown in the drawings the holder consists of an outer ring 2 having perforations to receive shade-holding screws 3 in the usual manner of shade holders. The holder also has an inner ring I connected with the outer ring 2 by arms 5, 6 and 7, these two rings and their connecting arms being struck from a single piece of metal. The ring 2 also has a flange 8 and the inner ring a flange 9, and preferably these flanges will be upset to form beads 1.0 and 11 which beads extend across the arms 5, 6 and 7 thus reinforcing the metal so that the holder may be made from comparatively light stock and yet be sufficiently strong. The arms 5, 6 and 7 are practically Specification of Letters Patent.

equi-distant from each other and between two of them, as for instance, 5 and 7, the ring 1 is divided and the ends 12 and 13 turned outward, the flange 9 being carried to the ends of the arms as clearly shown in the drawings. By thus continuing the flange to the end of the arms these arms are rein forced. The arms are perforated to permit a screw 14 to pass freely through one of them into engagement with the other arm whereby the ends of the arms may be drawn together, and to provide for sufiicient spring of the arms 12 and 13 the flange 9 will be notched as at 15 and 16, one notch adjacent to each of the arms 5 and 7. These notches permit the arms 12 and 13 to spring outward when the screw is turned in the proper direction to permit the device to be readily placed upon a lamp socket, and when so placed by turning a screw may be brought into clamping engagement with the socket. I thus produce a so called three-arm shade holder from a single piece of metal from very light stock and provide for sufficient spring of the inner ring without cutting into either of the arms.
I claim A shade holder comprising an inner ring, an outer ring,'and three connecting arms, all formed from a single piece of metal the inner ring divided between two of the arms and the ends turned outward, a clamping screw mounted in said out-turned ends, said inner ring formed with flanges between the arms, the flanges between the outturned ends and the adjacent arms formed with notches whereby said arms are allowed to spring, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IVALTER I-I. PERKINS.
