To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shade- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said, drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, iii- Figure l a side View of a lamp socket having a shade holder constructed in accordance with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 a similar view with the clamping ring turned off from the shade holder collar. Fig. 3 a sectional view on an enlarged scale, showing the shade holder-as applied to a lamp socket. Fig. 4 a top or plan view of the shade holder with the ring removed. Fig. 5 a sectional view of a modification in the position of the collar.
This invention relates to an improvement in shade holders, and particularly to shade holders for incandescent electric lights, the object of the invention being a simple and convenient means for attaching the shade or globe holders to the lamp sockets.
In the usual construction of lamp sockets, and as shown in the drawings, the socket or shell 2 is provided near its lower end with an annular rib 3, and my improved shade holder consists of a plate 4 formed, if desired, with perforations 5 of any preferred design and having a depending flange 6.
from which perforated ears 7 depend to receive the usual screws by which the globe or shade is held in place. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3. and 4 of-the drawings, the plate t is formed with an upwardly extending collar 8 which is divided by vertical slots 9 into several sections so that the collar can be sprung over 'the rib 3. Before the shade holder is sprung over this rib a ring 10 is passed onto the shell and this ring is an integral internally threaded tapering ring to engage with the threads on the collar 8 and so that after the collar has been sprung over the rib 3 the ring 10'may be turned down over it so as to clamp the collar on the shell. The plate with its flange and collar is struck up from sheet metal, and the ring isalso drawn and preferably the threads will be rolled forming an external spiral rib 11 which is preferably knurled or otherwise roughened so that it can be firmly grasped by the fingers.
Instead of forming the collar 8 to extend upward, the plate may be formed with an inwardly extending collar 12, as shown in Fig.6 of the drawings, this collar being slotted as in the previous construction to spring over the end of the socket and threaded to receive a ring 13 which will be applied from the inside of the holder.
Shade holders thus formed can be applied to the shells of lamp sockets of usual construction, and firmly hold the shade in connection with the socket.
By turning off the ring the shade holder can be snapped off of the socket and then the ring removed when desired, and they are with equal facility placed in position.
I claim 1. The herein described shade holder comprising a plate adapted to support a shade, said plate formed with an externally thread ed slotted collar, and an internally threaded integral tapered ring adapted to be screwed onto said collar, substantially as described.
2. The herein described shade-holder comprising a plate adapted to support a shade, said plate formed with an upwardly extending vertically slotted externally threaded collar, and an internally threaded integral tapering ring adapted to be screwed onto said collar, substantially'as described.
