vBe it `*known that I, CHARLES' A. LIND- sruin of Pittsburg, no rthside, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have inventedcertain newand usefullmprovements in Car Construotmn, kof which the following., 1s a full, clear, and exactdescriptlon, 'reference being had `to the accompanying drawings, in whichI like characters refer .to like parts, and in whicli- Figure l is a sectional elevation of .so much of the car construction as is necessary ,to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan 'View of a portion of same; Fiy 3 is a secf tional view 011 the line 3-3, -F1g. 1;-Ffig. 4 .is a detail face View of a casting .forming `a i part ofthe structure; Fig. .5 is an end eleva- .lion ofthe same; Fig. 6 is asectionalend elevation of the same; Fig. 7 is a detail plan view of a modified form of castinfr; Fig. 8 is a like View of still another modification;
.Figa-0 is a detail face View of castings shown f in Figs. 7 and-8;and Fig. 10rgisiatdetail .end elevation showing ystill anothermodification ofthe casting.
-Liri object of `the present inventionis to provide a novel form of connection Abetween a car underframe beam and th-e wall, side or end sheeting of acar.
'The invention is especially adapted to that class of cars known as general service gondolas in which the car bottom is made up of a. number of drop doors and in which said doors are closed'through' the medium of a bodily .movable shaft` connected to sa1d doors in any suitable manner and adapted to support said doors in closed position.
More speeificallystated, the invention consists vof a. casting forming the .connecting medium `between thecar underframe beam and thev wall of the car.
In thetypeof car above mentionedt'he use' of a castingas av connection between a car vumlerframe beam and the Wall of the car is especiallyl desirable in that it 'enables 'the formation of a suitable guide slot for ,thel said bodily movable shaft andreinforcedvA connecting flanges `orangles all y1nh one and the same piece or cestino.
The use of a casting as `a 'connecting mej diuin between a ear,` underfra-me Abeam yand 4the .ear side Where the bottom of the car 1s not composed of drop .doors results advantageously 1nthat reinforced .connecting anges or angles of ysufficient number and position ,may be made in a single ypiece or casting. i
' Incidental .to all types 'of'carswhere a.
castingr of the character" hereinshown and .described Pis employed, is" a reduction of parts, a stiffer construction and a cheaper construction.v v'
With the foregoing advantages in view,
the following detailed description will be v .more firmlyT appreciated;
Referring now in detail to 'thedrawinga l represents the center sill structure olf the car, 2 an underitrame beam, cross-.bearer or header, 3 the car Wall or' side sheeting' and t a car stake.'
5 is a casting forming theconnccting medium between the side or Wall 3 and-stake 4l and the crossbearer, header or beam'2. vCasting 5 ishere `shown as provided with a' slot 6 designed to receive and guide movement of' theshaft shown in my Patent N o. 833,402, dated October 16,41906,'and`entitled Steel car construction- In saidl patentthisslot wasy formed in plates which werearhfeted 'to sides o1" faces .of crossbearersf, beams or headers'to register1--with slots Jin said beams.`
vIn the present ease the beam, cross-bearer or header 2 is bifurcatedat 2u' at its end sothat l the slot 6 in casting '5 is unobstructed. Castf ving` flanges or ribs to reinforce it.
' The casting thus far'described is adapted' to be riveted or secured to one side or faceof bea1n,'erossbearer or header 2. If desired, the upper-flange 5 of the casting may extend the entire length (Fig. 9) of' the casting instead of being abbreviated as shown in Eig. 1,`which flange 5 may be depressed or de fleeted downwardly to form a seat for, the
flange 2" so that the upper surface ofthe is brought on a level or in plane flange '2h p K upper surface of the forward porwith the ltion of' the lla-nwe 5a. makino, a flat seat for D b the turned-under. end p ortionof the' car-'side sheeting 3. With a casting thus constructed the beam, cross-bearer or header 2 need, not extend as far out over the casting 5. sired, the casting may furthermore have ,its web "deflected so that the forward portion of the web of thecasting and the center of the car stake is brought in a' direct line with' the web of beam, cross-bearer or .header 2.
This shape is shownin Fig. 8.
As shown in- Fig. 10., the casting '5 is' formed with butone of the anges 5P, the
` other iiange 5b being formed by .riveting an.
projecting,
angle to the casting. l. As shown in Fig. 6, the perforation 6 is shown with an extended or .widened'wall if desired,. through bifurcation- 2 to form a wide bearing for the shaft'to be located-thereon. 1
Having thus described mjy-invention,v the I'following is what :I claim. as new thereinI and desire to. secure by Letters Patent:
l. A connection between a car `under-framev beam and wall consisting of a flanged-'mem- 1 4. In car construction, a beam having a beam and a ear wall structure consistingibf a member secured to said beam and lprof.- vided witha horizontal flange secured' tothe car wall and a vertical flange secured to the car' stake.

casting riveted tothe bifurcated portion of said bearii and to the wall and stake ofthe car. s 4 l -5 lIn car construction, v an underframe bean'nthe car walhacar stake and a ianged reinforced casting connecting said beam, car wall'a'nd stake and having a slot therein with a widened or extended wall'. l
6. In car construct'on, a car underframe beam slotted at its4 end,- a casting secured tosald beam having a slot therein in line'with' th'eslot in said beam and secured -to the car wall and stake.
7; In car' .,construction.- an. underframe-- beam; a casting secured thereto and having bppositely extending vertical flangesl and a a car stake secredftosaid said horizontal liange.'
8. vA connection between a car underframe and wall consistlng of an independently formed "member with a shaft guide slot formed therein.
9. In a car,.the nnd'erframe and a. car wall l stake in combination with an independently .forined member Iconnected to said yunder-4- frame and stake and formedJ with ashaft guide lslot therein.
v10. A connection between a car cross-v bearer andstake' conelstmgof an independently` formed member` with -a shaft guido .slot lformed therein.
