CHARLES F. SINCLAIR, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
SAFETY ROPE-GRIP.
Specification 0! Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application filed January 23, 1908. Serial No. 412,227.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. SINCLAIR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Safety Rope-Grip, of which the following is a'full, clear, and exact descri tion.
e invention relates to bathing appliances, and its object is to provide a new and improved rope gri for attachment to the wrist of a erson an for connection with one of the guide ropes of the bathing place, to allow the user to safely venture into the Water for bathing and swimming purposes, and to aid the user in learning to swim.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described herein after and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying draw ings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
The safety rope grip is preferably made of leather and fashioned at one end into a sleeve A, s lit lengthwise at the top and provided with a lace string B, for securely tightening the sleeve A on the users wrist, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. From the lower front edge of the sleeve A extends forwardly a strip or plate C, for the hand of the user to rest on, the forward end of the strip terminating in a strip D, adapted to be passed around the guide rope E and back onto the strip C, to connect with a buckle F attached to the strip C.
By the arrangement described the strip D forms a loop throu h which passes the guide rope E loosely, to a low the user of the device to freely slide along the guide rope without danger of the device becoming accidentally detached from the guide rope E or from the wrist of the user.
The strip or plate C is preferably provided at its side edges with outwardly-extending finger pieces G ada ted to be grasped by the fingers of the hand resting on the strip or plate C.
As the device is firmly attached to the wrist of the user, the strain incident to hanging on to the guide rope E is transmitted to the arm and not to the fingers, and hence the latter are not liable to become cramped, as is frequently the case when persons, especially women, hang on the uide rope E with the bare fingers. It will also be noticed that one hand and arm of the user is completely free to permit the user to make the proper swimming motion, thus aiding the user in learning to swim, especially as the beginner by the use of the device ains confidence sooner, and is thus enable to learn to swim in a comparatively short time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A rope grip, com rising a wrist sleeve for engagement with t e wrist of the user, and a strip extending from one end of the said sleeve and forming a hand rest, said strip having means at its outer end for loosely engaging a rope.
2. A rope grip, comprising a wrist sleeve for engagement with a wrist, a hand strip extending from one end of the said sleeve, and a strap and buckle on the outer end of the said hand strip whereby to form a loop for loosely engaging a rope.
3. A rope grip, compri ing a laced wrist sleeve, a hand strip extending inte rally from the said sleeve and provided wit sidewise extending finger pieces, and a strap and buckle on the free end of the said strip.
In testimony whereof I have signed. my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES F. SINCLAIR.
