Description

July 14, 1925.
W. D. TICKEL ET AL SWIMMING GLOVE a vENrpR C A TTORNE Y .luly 14, 1925.
UNITED STATES WALTER I). TICKEL, OF OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA.
SWIMMING GLOVE.
Application filed September 2, 1924. Serial No. 735,293.
1 all whom it may concern it known that 1, Citrus D. TICKEL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma City, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in f lwin'iming Gloves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has reference to a swimming device, or swimming glove. he object of the invention is to provide a light, loosefitting glove for the use of bathers, swimmers and beginners, to make the sport of paddling l5 and swimming in the water greater, and to increase the ability to better and more easily handle the body both on the surface of and un der the water; to allow the free use of the hand yet increase the power of life preservers in their work of rescuing those in trouble. Another object is to particularly assist beginning in learning to swim and to stay up in, or on the surface of the water with greater ease.
Other objects will appear from the specification and one page accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, showing the web and inside or palm of the glove.
Figure 2 is a like view of the device, showing the finger stalls and back of the glove.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in all the drawing.
The device is shaped much like the human hand and is made preferably of light weight cloth, or other light weight material so as not to require the carrying of too much weight when water-soaked, and may be made of rubber or other watershedding material so as to shed the water entirely when in use. The stall for the thumb, 1, and those for the first, second, third and fourthfingers 2, 3, 4t and 5 are all open at the end corresponding with their tips, but extend to the tips of the fingers and thumb the more to increase the size of the web surface. The other ends of the stalls of said thumb 1a and said four fingers 15, 16, 17 and 18 are open on the back of said gloves so as to be easily put on and taken off, and to prevent the water from filling the glove and remaining therein and increasing the weight carried. In the palm of the hand and between the thumb 1 and front finger 2, and between it and the other fingers shown a continuous web of the material used in the making of the glove is used, except that in the center of the palm is an opening 10 preferably circular, to allow inand egress of the water therethrough to prevent the user from carrying too much water with him, and to make the weight light and allow the use of gloves more like the use of the hands. The stitching or other joining of the finger stalls and the webs therebetween are shown at 13. The glove is fastened on the wrist by a button or clasp 11 and an elastic band or strap 12 with holes therein 19 and 20. On the backs of the fingers stalls 2, 3, l and 5 at the second joints of the fingers are holes 6, 7, 8 and 9 to permit the easy use of the fingers in their bending at will and the free use of the hands in the water. In use during the propelling stroke the hand is opened and the thumb and fingers 2, 3, 4 and 5 spread and extended. At the end of such stroke the hand is closed and the arm and hand drawn back toward the position for the beginning of the next stroke.
From the description and accompanying one page drawing, and the specification, the advantages of construction, operation, manufacture, and cheapness will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which my invention pertains, but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described, a glove of light weight cloth, or water-proof material, five stall members, openings in both ends, central openings in backs of four of them, a web member extending between said 100 stalls and over the front of glove, a central opening in said Web member, a button and strap fastening for the Wrist.
2. A device of the character described, a
5 glove of light Weight cloth, or Water-proof material, five stall members, openings in both ends thereof, central openings in "backs of four of them, a continuous Web member from the beginning of the thumb to the ending of the little fingers of said glove, except the central opening in the palm of the glove, button and strap means for fastening at Wrist.
